Broner came into that fight like the young flashy little menace of the sport — undefeated, talking crazy, dressing like he already owned the arena, and moving up to 147 to take Paulie’s WBA welterweight belt. Paulie on the other hand was the slick Brooklyn loudmouth veteran, all mouth, jab, pride, and attitude. So before they even touched gloves, this fight already had pure “two dudes who genuinely don’t like each other” energy. And then you add in the fact Broner kept bringing up Paulie’s girl situation? Man it wasn’t even promotion anymore, that was straight violation territory 😭

Now in the actual fight, Paulie started off sharp. He was busy, he was jabbing, moving, throwing combinations, trying to make Broner work. For the early rounds, he was making it awkward for Broner and lowkey giving him problems. Paulie was out there like:

“You young boy, you ain’t just finna walk in Brooklyn and take my belt easy.”

But Broner was doing that classic Broner nonsense — barely throwing for stretches, leaning back, shoulder rolling, talking to Paulie mid-fight, acting like he at a barbecue instead of in a world title fight. And somehow, even while looking lazy, he was still landing the cleaner, harder shots. That was the whole story of the fight: Paulie had the volume, Broner had the heavier, flashier punches. Broner would be quiet for a minute, then just crack Paulie with a right hand and remind everybody, “yeah I’m still here.” The official result was a split decision for Broner, with scores of 115-113, 113-115, and 117-111, making Broner a three-division world champion at 23.

And that’s why people still argue about it. If you like activity and ring generalship, you can say Paulie had a case. If you like clean, hard, effective shots, Broner probably edged it. A lot of media scorecards leaned Broner, but that 117-111 card had Paulie looking like he wanted to jump through the ropes and start a second fight in the parking lot.
