For years we've been reading about young drivers wanting to opt out of driving. And for years we've continued to plan & design infrastructure that requires driving.
Every year, 1,500 Michigan leaders convene on the state's car free island to discuss how great cars make our state and how to perpetuate its greatness...
@slowlysteady Anyone making pedestrians unsafe should be off the road.
Car accidents are 60 times more fatal to pedestrians than cyclist accidents. Slowing down cars should take 60x the priority https://t.co/32vDsTpE9S
Pedestrian collisions (2018-2022):
▶ 0.11% of bicycle collisions are fatal
▶ 6.65% of car collisions are fatal
Car collisions are 60 times more fatal to pedestrians than bicycle collisions!
Which makes sense, a bicycle is 15-60 pounds and a car is 3,000-8,000 pounds.

“I’m sick of seniors being used as an excuse for claiming that driving everywhere in San Francisco is essential. Here’s what [a] 74-year-old would like to see in city transportation […] Noticeably absent is getting into a car and driving everywhere at any time.”
Well said Fran!
@HangleyJr The fitting, just and *effective* consequence for unintentional injury/death caused by negligent driving is fine, community service and loss of car and license. In cases of criminal negligence jail time. But the thing that will actually make roads safer is fewer bad drivers.
Disability: 19 disability spaces were added behind the music concourse to account for the 15 spaces lost on JFK, a net gain for disabled drivers.
Seniors: Phyllis Meehan (78), Mary Fong Lau (78), Karen Cartagena (71), Sudhanshu Ghoshal (82) have all killed people with their cars in the bay area in the last few years. We should be making it harder for seniors to drive (increase insurance rates, increase testing requirements, food discounts for surrendering your license like in Japan), and provide alternatives (like discounted Waymo's).

@lcwhitlock14@alanburradell@myrnamelgarsf@SFMTA_Muni Prop I & J showed that a supermajority of SF residents support more bike infrastructure and restricting private car transit.
@sfbike are on the side of the supermajority.
It was cute to see merchants on Wednesday say that they cycle and support change https://t.co/JLDOm6QL5c
Speaking of Ulloa - West Portal: We have a messy intersection, at the horseshoe, I call it, where the station is, you know, there's a lot of things... even as a cyclist, before I had my multiple knee surgeries, I used to cycle a lot, I used to hate going through that intersection because it's just a disaster.
@lcwhitlock14@alanburradell@myrnamelgarsf@SFMTA_Muni Good.
Special interest groups dictating policy is not democracy.
We elect leaders to enact laws and appoint qualified specialists.
Don't like it? Elect new leaders.
@aka60643@jrskis Car cultists are outraged that they will be slightly inconvenienced.
They refuse to accept that private car ownership in a city is a privilege not a right.
@jrskis Right? My car-brain brother lives in West Portal. While he acknowledges the horror of what happened to that family at the bus stop, he complains about any measures to slow down car traffic or block it from some areas. *sigh*
I bike daily in SF. Waymos over human drivers for safety all the way. Human drivers care more about what’s in the car, waymos care more about what’s outside the car, which makes everyone safer on the roads.
@lcwhitlock14@alanburradell@myrnamelgarsf@SFMTA_Muni You misunderstand their purpose.
The committee is not a decision making body. They cannot vote on whether the West Portal Improvement Plan will be approved. Only the SFMTA board can do that.
This is an information gathering exercise to ensure opinions are voiced.
You'd have to ask the merchants.
Less than a week after we announced the boycott more than 60% of them had taken down their obstruction signs.
They were doing damage control on Wednesday, talking about how they cycle and believe the "messy" West Portal - Ulloa intersection needs to be redesigned. https://t.co/TJQmlC4bBR
