Some corrections:
You inherited 2% inflation. It doubled in 12 months after you became Chancellor. It is still 50% above the rate you inherited and 50% above target. It should fall to target 2% this summer. So two years to get back to where you started! What’s to boast about that?
Interest rates have been falling everywhere. UK cuts, which you don’t control, have been fewer and smaller because of your inflation record. We still have highest interest rate in G7. The Bank has made some cuts for the simple reason the economy is flat on its back. Well done.
Borrowing is slowly falling from a very high base. Almost six years after the pandemic-induced recession, we’re still borrowing around 4% GDP. And borrowing costs are the highest in the G7.
Retail sales are up in recent months. We’ll see how long that’s sustained. But the hospitality and construction industries are in crisis. Plus our massive services sector is stagnant.
UK fastest G7 economy? That’s simply a bare-faced lie. We grew by 0.1% in Q3 2025; and another 0.1% in Q4. End of.

As the Chancellor’s black hole deepens almost by the week — from £20bn to £30bn to £40bn+ — it’s hard to see how she can fill without resorting to increasing income tax, thereby breaking yet another manifesto commitment.
A 2p rise in all income tax rates would raise an extra £20bn/year.
Even that wouldn’t be enough. So other taxes will rise too.

During the decade to 1997, net UK immigration averaged around 30,000 per annum. Over the next ten years to 2007, that annual figure surged to 150,000. From then until 2017, net migration rose sharply again, to some 220,000 per annum.

But from 2017 until last year, the gates really have opened, with the UK importing 872,000 people in 2022, another 860,000 in 2023 and a net total of around 500,000 - equivalent to the population of Sheffield - over each of the last eight years.

This has "serious...unsustainable" implications for the UK’s already weak public finances and over-stretched public services, as outlined in a new essay by Professor David Miles, one of the most senior officials at the Office for Budget Responsibility, the government's fiscal watchdog.

This is a significant departure from the long-standing conventional wisdom among economists and officials that immigration has an overwhelmingly positive economic impact.

“The facts have changed” on immigration as the saying goes – and, it would appear, the UK's policymaking establishment, after years of denial, is now slowly starting to change its mind.
