Inmate Robert Brooks Dies After Brutal Assault by Corrections Officers at Marcy Correctional Facility. Marcy, NY - In a shocking revelation, court documents have detailed the violent death of inmate Robert Brooks at Marcy Correctional Facility, spotlighting systemic abuse within New York's correctional system. The incident, captured on body cameras, was described by New York State Investigator Ryan Paparella as an egregious assault involving multiple corrections officers. Robert Brooks, 43, succumbed to his injuries following what has been characterized as a relentless attack on December 10, 2024. The assault began with Officer Nicholas Anzalone transporting Brooks to the infirmary in a dehumanizing manner—face-down and handcuffed. The journey was far from a mere transfer; body camera footage reveals Anzalone repeatedly striking Brooks, targeting his head, back, and torso. Anzalone's method included gripping Brooks' shirt around the neck, potentially to choke or further control him during the assault. As they neared the infirmary, the violence escalated. Other unnamed officers joined Anzalone, contributing to a group assault that included punches, kicks, and other forms of physical abuse. This collective action suggests not only a lack of intervention but an active participation in the brutality against Brooks. Once inside the infirmary, the assault didn't stop. Officer Robert Kessler, who had assisted in transporting Brooks, was seen shoving him forcefully against a wall, likely causing further injury. Officer Mathew Galliher then pinned Brooks to an examination bed by applying pressure to his chest, an action that could have restricted breathing and added to the torture. The duration of the assault, as shown in the footage, indicates it was not a brief altercation but a sustained act of violence. There was no apparent effort to provide Brooks with medical attention until after the assault had concluded, pointing to an intent to punish or harm. The death of Robert Brooks has led to significant legal and administrative repercussions. Governor Kathy Hochul has ordered the termination of 14 involved corrections officers, with the New York Attorney General’s Office conducting a thorough investigation into the incident. No criminal charges have been filed as of now, but the case has sparked discussions about the use of force within correctional facilities, the culture of violence, and the need for systemic changes. Brooks' family, alongside civil rights advocates, are calling for justice, accountability, and reforms to prevent such tragedies. The incident has not only brought grief to Brooks' loved ones but has also cast a dark shadow over the operations at Marcy Correctional Facility, prompting a reevaluation of correctional practices across the state. This case serves as a grim reminder of the vulnerabilities faced by inmates and the critical need for oversight, transparency, and humane treatment within correctional institutions.
