I’ve worked with several groups, both boy bands and girl groups.

The drama and lack of communication is almost a given with younger groups. Especially without proper guidance.

But when you see acts over 40 still acting like kids, it’s a problem.

Exactly. MTV’s evolution from a music video network into a broader pop culture network is a huge part of the story. And whatever happened to the network afterward, Michael Jackson’s role in MTV’s rise is a historical fact that should not be minimized. He did not just provide MTV with hit videos. He helped demonstrate how powerful the music video medium could be as a form of visual storytelling and cultural event making. Those moments are part of MTV’s history whether the network chooses to foreground them or not.

They can try to erase history but those that remember, remember. MTV has seen its glory days. The VMAs (as of late) are honestly about the performances and since we don't get those types of moments anymore, they take whatever they can get. I honestly think no one expected MJ to pass the way he did; hence why they can't (or could) give him these lifetime achievement awards even though he was long overdue and had one of them named after him long before he passed. MTV was pop culture laced in with music. The music aspect was removed and things changed. MJ put MTV on the map during the '80s and '90s, but the music tastes switched not long after and they stopped playing music videos shortly after.
