What if a 90-minute mountain journey could one day take just 10 minutes?

That question led Uttarakhand innovator Ravi Tamta to build something that looks straight out of a sci-fi film: a single-seater electric flying vehicle designed using modified drone technology.

From Kaflikhan village in Almora, Tamta developed the HAPIDA SKYNeX, a multi-rotor prototype that can take off vertically with a person onboard.

He says the idea was inspired by the challenges of travelling through Uttarakhand’s mountainous terrain, where a road journey of around 40 km can take nearly 90 minutes.

The prototype has now completed an initial test flight in Almora, lifting several feet off the ground.

But this isn’t a flying car—at least not yet. It is closer to a single-seat electric VTOL aircraft, and it still needs extensive testing, safety validation and regulatory approvals before it could become a practical mode of transport.

Still, there’s something fascinating about seeing an idea born from a very local problem take flight—literally.
