By June 1898, Spain had held Guam for four centuries, but the island was so neglected that the local authorities hadn’t received news for months. They didn't even know the Spanish-American War had begun.

The USS Charleston slides into the harbor, expecting resistance. Nada. So they fired a few warning shots at an old fort, which the Spanish interpreted as a friendly salute. Local officials rowed out in a boat and apologized that they were out of gunpowder so they couldn’t return the "salute."

The Americans said, "Uh, yeah ... we’re at war so you’re our prisoners.” The Spanish officials were stunned. After some awkward back-and-forth, the Spanish governor surrendered, along with ~50 poorly equipped soldiers. No one got hurt. Completely bloodless.⁠

US sailors raised the flag and found a single American citizen on the island. A merchant whose previous job was as an elevator operator in San Francisco. The ship's captain said, "you're in charge now," and sailed off to the Philippines.

It took about six months for the Americans to return.

This is such a dark story. The police lied to the grieving family that their dead son was the aggressor, and also lied that the police on the scene immediately administered first aid.

Then the supposedly independent body, the IOPC (Independent Office for Police Conduct) released a statement and a letter to Henry's family dated 10th April 2026, that stated:

“After careful consideration of the available evidence, the decision was made... that no HIOWC officers would be subject to conduct or criminal investigation. This was because there were no concerns identified in relation to officer actions.”

They later were forced to reverse that position once bodycam footage became available.

Sure fighting dorne might get them land but muscling land from their neighbours with a crown too weak to stop them would be more profitable and cheaper

@JMilla43874993 I suppose it make sense, the chinese migrated as part of wider trade networks so naturally made up a commercial class that simply grew with time. I be very interested to know if that 3% is concentrated in the old trading ports (like how singapore is majority Chinese)

@nabulionee2 Yeh but how tall was Charles’ wife? Also wasn’t Charles brother tall? If anything the question truly is why was charcles a midget.
But generally height isn’t just genetic a lot plays into it like general health. I’m shorter than my dad as I had allergies when i was kid.

@Beefy3101 @GenStilicho Losing power isn’t just rebellions its people simply ignoring the centre. Church might have prevented rebellions but it doesn’t explain why the crown was obeyed. Just like the emperors of Japan weren’t overthrown for religious reasons but were figure heads for a thousand years

@Beefy3101 @GenStilicho But the only of those that make actual sense is Aegon and Daeron. And even with Daeron its a bit ridiculous. Why did 50k men go off to fight dorne with a 15 year old? The kings of England struggled to mobilise the English nobility for war and they were more centralised

@Beefy3101 @GenStilicho I know but 200 years is far too slow for that change. Realistically all real power would have evaporated during Aegon III’s reign. Not to mention they’d have needed a bureaucracy to deal with the logistics of feeding dragons, especially as they didn’t own much land.

@GenStilicho Its one of the jarring things about the world building as the three kingdoms behaves like a centralised medieval England whilst being structured like the medieval HRE. But arguably worse than the HRE as these 7 kingdoms who could individually challenge the King’s power base
