Five years ago today, Sir David Amess was murdered while doing what he had done for almost 40 years: serving the people who elected him.
He never stopped showing up for them. On the day his life was taken, he was there once again, listening and helping, just as he always had.
Today we remember a much-loved colleague and friend. Above all, our thoughts are with his wife and children, who carry his loss every day.

Very sad to have had to announce the death of my friend Jeffrey Archer on the show last night. A man of talents, flaws, positivity and bouncebackability, with a zest for life. He was a terrific interviewee. He sometimes invited me to his flat on Albert Embankment as he loved political gossip. His trilogy of Prison Diaries remain the best books of the last 20 years on what life is like in prison. He sold 350 million books in 47 languages in 114 countries but the literary cogniscenti always looked down their noses at him. I tried in vain to get him to write his autobiography. Yes, he sometimes lacked judgement, no he never achieved his aim to be a front rank politician, yes he did some bad things. But what a life. What. A. Life. @Jeffrey_Archer
Sad news to hear of the loss of Jeffrey. Always had time for people, always fun & have seen him raise extraordinary sums for charity. Thoughts go out to his family & friends. #RIP
I can’t believe that Jeffrey Archer - who was always so alive - is suddenly dead. We had a wonderful day together yesterday - as anyone who was there will tell you, he was in brilliant form on stage yesterday celebrating the publication of his 50th and final best-selling novel.
Jeffrey Archer was a dear friend and an extraordinary human being. His gift for storytelling was matched by his wit, warmth and boundless energy. Life was never dull in Jeffrey’s company.
As a charity auctioneer, he was a force of nature: commanding a room, making people laugh and persuading them to dig deeper. He used that remarkable talent to raise millions for charitable causes, leaving a legacy of generosity that reaches far beyond his books.
Behind the celebrated author was a man with an enormous heart, fiercely loyal to his friends and generous with his time.
My love and deepest condolences go to Mary and the whole family.
Jeffrey, it was a privilege to call you my friend. You were one of a kind. May you rest in eternal peace. 💔
I’m so sad to hear that Jeffrey Archer has died. A brilliant, generous and kind human being.
When he heard I’d also written a book about our mutual hero years after his, he bought me lunch and offered me any help he could for mine (including below’s joint talk).
What perhaps less people knew is just how hard he worked. When I admitted I’d only written two drafts of my book, he told me “that’s the problem with you bloody journalists”. For each book he wrote, he did 14 drafts. And he pumped out 42 best sellers like that. RIP in novelists’ heaven Jeffrey.
Connectivity creates opportunity. And opportunity shouldn't stop where network coverage ends.
Today, Beeline Kazakhstan became the first operator in Kazakhstan to launch Starlink's Satellite to Mobile Service, extending connectivity beyond the reach of traditional mobile infrastructure and helping customers stay connected in remote and hard-to-reach areas directly from their smartphones.
From supporting everyday communication to strengthening resilience during emergencies, this milestone reflects how innovation can help connect people when it matters most.
Delivered through Beeline Kazakhstan's Janymda super app, the launch is another step in VEON's commitment to transforming lives through technology, expanding digital inclusion, and bringing essential connectivity to the communities we serve.
Congratulations to our teams at Beeline Kazakhstan, Starlink and our partners across Kazakhstan on making this industry-first achievement possible.

Powerful piece in the @thetimes today on struggle 1st time buyers & our housing market faces: New home approvals sink to 13-year low as PM revives Help to Buy. https://t.co/KnIAlKEI6a
True too, we need good supply side corrections to sit alongside new demand side support, then we can really see the sector fly, more houses delivered & that will drive our economy to growth.👇
The Government promised to build 1.5 million new homes over the course of this Parliament.
Then, they put up tax, introduced a load of new regulations, and made life impossible for builders with their mad energy policies.
So, unsurprisingly, nobody can afford to build anything!
@MarcHumps@BethRigby Fair, is part of the wider work needed to re stimulate the market, help buyers onto the ladder & through that give confidence to market to increase supply. Needs more supply side work too.
If correct, this will be good news for the housing sector who have long been calling for some demand side support to get the housing sector moving again & help first time buyers to get onto the housing ladder. Good for the economy, good for social mobility.
🚨 BREAKING: Andy Burnham will announce a new "Help to Buy" scheme next week
Called "Your First Home", it will allow young people to buy their first home with a deposit of just 2.5%
@UKWealthLog Agreed, re not that simple. This has to be just one part of a wider package to get supply moving again, but it is a good step in right direction.
@htowen97 True and for that we need to get supply moving again, we will also benefit more supply side reform, as well as demand side. This is a start though.
We welcome today's announcement of a new equity loan scheme and the Government's recognition of the significant challenges facing first-time buyers and the wider housing market.
We have long called for action to improve access to home ownership, and our analysis shows a well-designed scheme can make a meaningful difference for households struggling to get onto the property ladder.
We look forward to working with Government and the wider sector to refine the details and get the scheme up and running quickly, ensuring the it works for buyers across the country and home builders of all sizes.
Great news to help people get onto the housing ladder. Credit where it is due, this is a positive step to help get the housing sector moving again & will help our economy grow.👇now to see the detail…🤞🏻
If you don't have help from the bank of Mum and Dad, this is for you:
This government is introducing the Your First Home scheme to help more young people buy their first home with a deposit of just 2.5%.
That means less to save upfront, and lower monthly costs once you’ve got the keys.
And this help is coming soon, with pre-registration set to open by the end of the year.
1,440 minutes make up a customer's day. Every one of them is where augmented intelligence should show up, not just the big moments.
In his latest op-ed for @GSMA@MWCHub 26 Doha, our Group CEO @Kaan_Terzioglu writes about AI1440: bringing that intelligence to people in local languages, on devices they already carry, and to the businesses and governments we serve.
It's built on three things: sovereign local-language AI models, digital services that help people achieve more in daily life, and agentic AI for enterprise clients.
