Annie Oakley in 1922 giving a demonstration at the age of 62...

By 1922, Annie Oakley was already one of most famous sharpshooters in American history. Born Phoebe Ann Mosey in rural Ohio in 1860, she learned to shoot as a child to help feed her family after her father’s death. Her hunting skills became so accurate that local restaurants and hotels regularly bought the game she supplied.

Oakley rose to international fame as part of Buffalo Bill’s Wild West show, where she performed for audiences across the United States and Europe. She could reportedly hit playing cards edge-on, shoot coins tossed into the air, and extinguish candle flames with a single shot. During tours in Europe, she performed before royalty including Queen Victoria and Kaiser Wilhelm II.

Even into her 60s, Oakley continued public shooting exhibitions despite injuries from train accidents and years of touring. Her reputation helped challenge 19th-century ideas about women’s roles in sports and firearms training.

Annie Oakley once shot over 4,700 clay targets in a row without a miss.
