Willie Fritz is the head football coach at the University of Houston.

He's had 6 head coaching jobs and has coached high school to P4 ball.

I sat down with him recently to talk about his journey and the top lessons he's learned along the way.

Casey Woods—head football coach at Missouri State—was asked about how they are using AI at the CUSA press conference.

He is dead on with protecting young coaches.

Here is what he said:

"Anytime in your program, you've got to combine old school toughness with being able to be cutting edge.

You don't want to be so cutting edge that you lose the core of what wins games, which is physicality.

There's a guy named Thad Wells who is a really decorated, successful high school coach. He and I have had a great relationship for a long time.

He's on the forefront of introducing AI through a coach's mindset.

Sometimes computer guys and coach guys, you've got to find a way to make sure their mindsets can mesh. Thad's doing a great job of that.

AI ain't going away. So we've got to make sure we embrace exactly what it is we can do with it.

But the thing we've got to monitor is that we still have to coach our young coaches.

Our coaches have to know what's going on schematically, how we address and attack things. They've got to know football.

We can't get to where they're ignoring their responsibility in learning the game.

Even though AI can produce what we need, if our guys can't know it and articulate it in a teacher setting to our players, then we've got a problem.

We just have to monitor that as we integrate it into our game plan."

If you’re on a P4 staff and you’re not using AI for everything you do off the field, you’re officially behind.

We spent the last few days with a P4 program. Even before partnering with Rooski they were ahead of the curve. Now they’re setup to run laps around the teams they face in terms of the work that gets done in the building.

The next arms race in football is AI.

Rooski has consulted over 200 programs from the NFL to 1A high school in the last 60 days.

Some teams get it and are integrating it for the 2026 season. This will give them an entire season head start. That is a giant gap to overcome w/ AI.

Elite scouting was bought with bodies.

GAs, analyst and QCs digging all week for an edge.

That just ended.

In 2026, any staff can afford that depth.

Watch our guy. Personnel change, and he strolls on late — the defense never counts him. Completely legal: he lined up inside the numbers and was set before the snap. Eligible, and hidden in plain sight.

Works because he knew exactly where to be and got set with zero hesitation — that's the whole point of running your calls off one picture instead of a memorized paragraph.
