We went through a strange time where some Very Smart People™ advocated to close the achievement gap by taking kids who otherwise could be high- achievers and simply hold them back instead. More than an apology, we need to keep these people out of education policy going forward.
This is dead-on. The ideas that hurt Nikole Hannah-Jones's daughter also hurt many other kids, and the New York Times bears responsibility for that. It's not enough to just shrug and say they meant well.
The ONLY thign that differentiated them from their competitors was that they were selling the experience of walking into a store and smelling doughnuts cooking - seeing them come down the conveyor and getting one hot. I can still taste it. Imagine just abandoning that and thinking it would work?
@andrew_rudick@JaneKim@SenBenAllen Very High (Lake Arrowhead). My folks had to move in with us when COVID hit, 6 months in we bought them a place to get them out of ours. The rising insurance and devastation to the TV industry has made it tough to keep, but the alternative is them moving back in so here we are.
@andrew_rudick Ha, yeah became a bit of an armchair expert trying to understand it all since we own in a fire zone. After a few years I found a small out-of-state carrier who gave us full coverage so I was able to cancel FAIR, but still afraid eventually they'll realize where it is and drop us.
@andrew_rudick To be clear, my empathy for the thousands of people in the Palliaades and Altadena who got dropped in the months leading up to the fires, let alone the hundreds of thousands across CA in the preceding years, is definitely not an endorsement of Pratt becoming mayor of LA lol.
@andrew_rudick Yes, I meant that even if you opt for replacement cost (which we couldn't afford) you still initially only get ACV unless and until you are able to start rebuilding. In our case we have enough to pay off the mortgage and clear debris, then sell the land for whatever it's worth.
@andrew_rudick Yeah I think that article is where the confusion comes from, doesn't directly quote them on the insurance but paraphrases (and seemingly erroneously extrapolates) that because they were dropped by their carrier leading up to the fires that they were uninsured vs underinsured.
@andrew_rudick His financial irresponsibility is renowned, but there's conflicting reporting re: insurance:
"Pratt said his home was insured under California’s last-resort FAIR plan and that the couple’s payout was about $1 million, far from enough for a full rebuild."

@Aaronjac1986@TheMarkLong Next week's elim has one of my favorite music placements of the season, and then it's Final time and only gets better from there!
Watching Sam & Frank compete in this daily challenge is easily the highlight of the episode for me. 😂
Also, they got 4 Rings while Dario & Ashley got 7...They actually didn't do that bad in comparison.
