For anyone who has ever asked me what I do... here’s the gene gun in action! In the last few months I have used this gene gun to bombard carefully designed #CRISPR vectors into over 3000 #sorghum embryos @UFIFASAgronomy#phdlife#genomeediting
Using CRISPR, we obtained sugarcane lines with a range of coediting frequencies at the LG1 gene! These showed intermediate changes in leaf inclination angle have the greatest potential to increase biomass yield (up to 18%)!

Sugarcane is a prime candidate for producing advanced biofuels, but its complex genome makes breeding a challenge.
A CABBI team at @UF used CRISPR/Cas9 to fine-tune sugarcane's leaf angle so it could capture more sunlight and increase its biomass.

This is the first peer-reviewed publication describing a field trial of CRISPR-edited sugarcane.
The #CABBI study was published in @PlantBiotechJ:

The benefits of being in the sugarcane fields predawn for sample collection is getting to see the sunrise over UF-IFAS PSREU! #saturdaysampling@CABBIbio@UFIFASAgronomy
@BBerryBreeding @UFIFASAgronomy I’m not sure yet! For the moment I’m going to be finishing up a few side projects in the Altpeter Lab while I search for a position!
Today I successfully defended my PhD Dissertation! Four years, a global pandemic, two major surgeries, and I’m finally a Dr 🌱🧬👩🏻🎓 #PhDone@UFIFASAgronomy
In 2022, Dr. Altpeter’s students and postdocs won 9 awards at international and regional conferences, including 1st place in the student oral presentation competition (Eleanor Brant) and 1st place in the postdoc oral presentation competition (Viet Cao) at the SIVB conference. 6/8
Dr. Fredy Altpeter, molecular genetics and biotechnology professor @UFIFASAgronomy, is our April 2023 plant breeder of the month! Dr. Altpeter develops and deploys biotech approaches for the improvement of sugarcane, turf, forage and bioenergy grasses. 1/8
This week it has been my pleasure to present at the 7th Annual UF Plant Science Symposium! Thank you very much @UFPlants for coordinating such an excellent event and for awarding me a 1st place Oral Presentation Award! @UFIFASAgronomy#UFatWork
A #CABBI team has demonstrated the first precision gene editing in the bioenergy crop #miscanthus!
The work will accelerate efforts to tap the potential of this highly productive, complex perennial grass for sustainable biofuels & bioproducts.🌾

A new task for the Altpeter lab - digging up sugarcane that was buried post harvest to help protect it from the unusually harsh frosts in Florida this year #UFAgronomy
🎉 Congratulations to Dr. Baskaram Kannan, recipient of the 2023 Superior Accomplishment Award in the Administrative/Supervisory Category. Dr. Kannan is Dr. Fredy Altpeter biological scientist. #UFIFAS#UFatWork 🧡💙🐊
