by any objective measure, scotland is in a deeply bad place: racism and transphobia are rife, poverty and its effects are endemic, the housing crisis is one of the worst in europe, the social forces required to change things simply aren't up to the challenge

reality checks aren't pleasant, but they are necessary to actually improve things. there is a huge extent to which progress is frustrated by this idea that scotland and scottish politics is perfect, that any criticism must come from bad-faith grudges

while almost every aspect of this leadership campaign has been abysmal, the one good thing is hopefully at least that it shatters the illusion of scotland or the SNP as some unique bastions of progressiveness
