@BP_Bryony It’s more of a “hold” sign - Neil Glickman uses the term a lot in his work and at a mental health conference a few years ago, that’s the sign he used - “language hold” (with the fist up as if out of reach). Cos it’s basically withholding, not truly depriving.
@deafdragongirl It’s a panto thing rather than interpreting, I think. I prefer captions but I go to the panto as an event with deaf friends so usually it’s BSL-interpreted. Both would be ideal! Especially cos panto can be witty and a lot of hidden adult humour can get lost in translation
@paulbelmontesli I’m not mad 😂 eating the frog is an expression for doing something you REALLY don’t want to do and getting it over with before doing anything else. You can do it! Eat that frog. Ribbit.
@paulbelmontesli Easier to wear the professional act and play a role than it is to be yourself and deal with everyday stuff. I feel “the fear” as a mother in a situation where I’d be absolutely fine as a professional! You’re human. Go easy on yourself 🤗 and go eat the frog!
I wonder if there’s a whole generation of women who have been pregnant and utterly unable to NOT think of Ripley Scott’s Alien?! And is there now a generation that DON’T think of that at all?! They’re inextricable to me. Please tell me I’m the only one…
@nationalrailenq Well why have the trains from Birmingham to Derby been cancelled for the two hours? I had to wait 1.5 hours for the next one only to find it was cancelled. So over 2.5 hours in total. In a heatwave. Now the schedule says 19.03. It will be PACKED!!
@nationalrailenq what is happening with the trains to Derby from Birmingham New Street? Every single train has been cancelled and I’ve now been waiting over two hours. Deaf and in need of support. Thanks.
@NadiaNadarajah@NRCPD@ASLIuk Important to advocate for yourself and deaf community of course! I’m just mindful there’s a lot of pressure and criticism of interpreters and I bet the good ones are feeling pretty fed up. If we come together, we can help end bad practice. Stronger together and all that!
@NadiaNadarajah@NRCPD@ASLIuk This is an example of bad practice and certainly not something all interpreters do. Important to highlight examples of good practice like interpreters finding a substitute or being transparent. I know so many good interpreters, it’s a shame to see them lumped with bad apples
@VickyNunn1 I remember this happening around 12 years ago - wonder if this is a pattern? If so, it will pass. We just need to remember we are on the same side. Just know I appreciate you and think you’re brilliant!
Just had my mind blown reading A.K.Benjamin’s Let Me Not Be Mad. It’s like The Unbearable Lightness of Being & The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat yet distinctly unique somehow. Evocative writing - a real work of art! Neuroscience meets mental illness meets Nietzsche 👁🧠❤️
@AdamCSchembri Thank you for asking this question! Fascinating to read the replies and learn even more of the idiosyncrasies of English! For me it’s “in the road” unless it’s in a different context like the egs people gave. Never knew our use of on the road” influenced how we use “in the road”!
@destinyischoice I don’t stand for transphobia at all. I won’t unfollow her as it is interesting to see how & why people like her have those views. Cancel culture shuts down opportunities to learn about differing views & further polarises positions. Def not endorsing her via publicity or money.
