Youth Empowerment is at the Center of our Programming through our #InternshipProgram

For years, Uganda has faced major consequences of unemployment. With a young, fast-growing population where approximately 78% are under age 30, this is a challenge that requires all of us to take responsibility and act with a multi sectoral approach.
New demographic data shows us the gap between those in formal employment and those in non-formal, non-civil employment opportunities. The numbers remind us why youth empowerment cannot wait.

Meaningful Youth Engagement starts with giving young people equal platforms to showcase their capacities, we can boldly say that our interns are doing the magic, as they engage with communities as part of learning.

At @Nyakayojosacco, we believe the answer starts with skills. Through our internship program, we’re equipping young people with what we call “soft skills” the tools they need to navigate real-life challenges, from problem identification to problem solving.

Our commitment goes beyond finance. We extend both financial and non-financial services to the communities we serve because real empowerment means preparing young people to lead, adapt and create opportunities wherever they are.

Sharing our Impact!
Our role is to impact the lives of thousands of people who believe in our model of work. We exist to serve members and communities through practical support, not just financial services.

Investing in youth:
We believe a sustainable workforce begins with equipping young people with the right life skills. By empowering them early, we prepare them to excel and achieve their future dreams with confidence and discipline.

Field work experience:
Today we took a section of our intern students for field work. This gave them hands-on technical skills in business operations. Learning what we do and how we do it is what we’re passionate about enabling, so they can perform better and understand real-world finance.

From the field, our interns interacted directly with business communities. That interaction built practical experience beyond the classroom and showed them how cooperative values translate into service, trust, and relationships on the ground.

Culture + gratitude
As part of best practice, we started the day with a debrief meeting to orient them on expectations. That culture cements teamwork and purpose from the start. As a cooperative, we’re grateful to give back through our internship program, contributing to sustainable education and building the leaders our community needs.

#EmpoweringYoungPeople: Yesterday, under the Nyakayojo sACCO Internship Program, I had the privilege of leading a one-day interns’ orientation exercise held at our Head Office in Mbarara City.

This program reflects who we are as a community SACCO, committed to empowering communities, with a special focus on youths financial inclusion. I believe investing in young people’s career development today builds stronger leaders and a more resilient community tomorrow.

What did we cover?
Was able to engage the interns on the fundamentals that guide us: cooperative principles, our shared vision and values, and the organizational culture that makes us unique. They left with practical knowledge on both the “why” and “how” of our work.

As a team, we’re committed to walking closely with them, supporting, mentoring and empowering each intern to gain real skills, confidence, and experience that will serve them long after their time with us.

Over the years, my passion for youth and community empowerment has kept me in spaces of knowledge sharing and capacity building. By bringing young voices into our work, we strengthen decision-making and contribute to sustainable community development that truly reflects the people we serve.

Taking you through our 2026 Internship Program.

Yesterday under our Internship Program, we welcomed and oriented a new cohort of interns from different academic institutions at our Head Office in Mbarara City. It was an exciting start as we introduced them to the @Nyakayojosacco family and the work we do.
This program reflects who we are as a community Sacco (Sacco committed to empowering communities) with a special focus on young peoples' inclusion. We believe that investing in youth career development today creates stronger leaders and a more resilient community tomorrow.

What did we cover during this exercise!?
During the orientation, we engaged the interns on the fundamentals that guide us. They received practical knowledge on cooperative principles, our shared vision and values and the organizational culture that makes us unique, equipping them with both knowledge on “why” and the “how” of our work.

We look forward to walking closely with them through this journey. As a team, we are committed to supporting, empowering and mentoring each intern so they gain real skills, confidence and experience that will serve them long after their time with us, this means a lot to us.
