Three of his young children (François, Patrice Jr., and Juliana) were smuggled out of Leopoldville using Egyptian diplomatic cover, fake passports, and UN-linked Egyptian personnel. They were taken to Cairo and raised in the household of Egyptian diplomat Mohamed Abdel Aziz Ishak under the protection of President Gamal Abdel Nasser.

Nasser later sent a plane to rescue Lumumba’s widow Pauline Opango Lumumba and their remaining children.
