🛢️ 🇻🇪 Chevron is finalizing a deal to significantly expand its Venezuela operations.

Some context on why this one stands out.

Chevron never left Venezuela, even after ExxonMobiln and ConocoPhillips exited in 2007 following nationalization under Hugo Chávez.

That makes it the only US major with an uninterrupted track record in the country and already the largest US oil producer there.

Now it's adding 2 fields in the Orinoco Belt, one of the largest heavy oil deposits in the world, holding "billions of barrels" in reserves.

This sits inside a broader wave of contract migrations happening under Venezuela's amended hydrocarbon law, which gives foreign firms more flexibility to expand fields, export barrels, and repatriate proceeds.

Chevron's deal is expected to be the largest of several agreements getting signed in the coming days, alongside similar moves from Eni, ONGC, GeoPark, and GE Vernova.

It's also entirely separate from Washington's own deal: a 100 year lease structure giving the US government a direct equity stake and guaranteed share of output across 17 different oilfields.
