The argument that a Bonfire Commission must be opposed because it would become "another Parades Commission" says a lot.

I'm not sure it's rooted in a genuine fear that legitimate cultural expression would be curtailed - thousands of parades take place every year. The role of the Parades Commission has never been to abolish parading - it cannot actually ban a parade - but to place conditions on the small minority of events where there were (& are ) concerns about intimidation, sectarianism, disorder & public safety. Remember Drumcree in the 1990s? Enough said.

The real concern seems to be that a Bonfire Commission would apply the same principle to bonfires. It would distinguish between legitimate cultural celebration and the paramilitary influence, sectarian displays, racist material, hate symbols, illegal flag burning & health/safety breaches that have become intertwined with bonfire culture in a minority of locations.

If that's the objection, then the issue is not about cultural expression. It's the prospect that the excesses attached to some bonfires - including breaches of the law - rather than the bonfires themselves—would become subject to centralised scrutiny and regulation.

@CarlJWhyte You spoke brilliantly yesterday Carl. The PSNI need to step up. Surely its a criminal offence to build these on either public or HE land?........not to mention the damage done to access these sites. If I built a campfire at the front of my estate I'd be arrested,charged & fined.
