When I was a kid all I wanted to do was grow up. Read grown-up books, watch grown-up films, speak and live like a grown-up. I rarely encounter that attitude among my own students, relatives, contemporaries. If you think age has nothing to offer but burdens, why bother living?
Genuinely, Jane Eyre, which I still count as a favorite. East of Eden which I read in AP Lit and is still probably my favorite today. My YA inclusion from that time would be The Book Thief.
