The Oregon Kelp Forest Protection & Restoration Initiative is slated to receive $2.5M in funding that will put Oregon’s coastal communities to work promoting healthy kelp forests and building local capacity for kelp forest stewardship.
Thank you to @SenJeffMerkley & @RonWyden!
Hey fellow marine science lovers- go follow the Menge Lab’s new instagram page!
We’ll be sharing field photos, lab member highlights, and tons more!! :)
Took some of my best friends tidepooling, and one had NEVER seen a real sea star before!
Safe to say I had to change that, and they loved every minute of it!
Plus, a good Halosaccion squish is something everyone needs to experience at least once.
We're proposing to list the sunflower sea star as threatened under the Endangered Species Act. One of the largest sea stars in the world, it has recently experienced a sharp decline in abundance https://t.co/LW4MqWL7ah

Current PhD students/recent grads - any advice for prospective graduate students? I’m getting ready to apply to programs this year and would really appreciate any wisdom that can be bestowed! :)
Calling all echinoderm aficionados!! Does anyone have an idea why this Evasterias is partly orange?
Not sure if this one is just quirky or if there’s an underlying cause for its seemingly odd appearance 🤔🤔
Convinced my dad to go night tidepooling with me this week while I was home for the holidays.
I didn’t even know that umbrella crabs (2nd photo) existed until we stumbled across one and had to ID it when we got home!
Things I did this term:
Graduated 🎓🥳🥂
Attended a lecture and lab dressed as Pitbull 😎🌏
Presented my research on Pycnopodia ⭐️🌊
Spent time with people I love 🥰🫶
Thank you @OSUScience for the best 3(ish) years I could have possibly asked for!!
🎉Congrats to @OSUScience's Megan Wilson on successfully defending her PhD dissertation today. She studied how ocean conditions & predatory juvenile salmon affect the growth & survival of young cabezon groundfish. Megan was a Malouf scholar funded by Oregon Sea Grant in 2019-20.
Great piece on the sunflower sea star and the roadmap to recovery. Thank you @DailyAstorian for covering this important story.
'It just sort of breaks your heart' https://t.co/tj9HXRNXhb via @DailyAstorian
Managed to not pass out while giving my first talk EVER at #WSN2022 on the reproductive timing of Pycnopodia!
Super thankful for this experience and all of the lovely people I got the chance to meet this weekend! @PiscoScience@OSUScience@SeaDocSociety
Some of my dear friends came to watch me present my research on sunflower sea stars at #StateoftheCoast!
I learned so much about how to strengthen my science communication skills, and got great data analysis advice from fellow presenters.
So proud of our undergraduate students presenting their summer research at State of the Coast today! We had fish, urchins and sea star presentations! @PiscoScience@BrennaRothman @Faith__Townsend @tomascalvanese @oregonkelp@ODFWMarine
Today is National Pasta Day, oh yes it is!!
Wondering how on Earth we at CEOAS are going to make National Pasta Day about us? Wonder no more, as we give you, CEOAS friends and fans, a helpful guide to pasta shapes and how to serve them.
