1/2 Frank H. Underhill, 1946: "And as far as I have been able to observe, young students of this present generation are still repelled by Canadian history because they find in it little more...
@DoraWhoNotices Ah, I see. So the debts would be owed to those “in the same house” - the same country? (these are genuine questions, not argument-as-questioning)
@AngelaSterritt This comment would only make sense if the Squamish nation was planning on burning down settlers’ homes then forcefully expelling them. Since they’re planning on ~building~ a great deal of housing, it makes even less sense.
This is the digital ‘front page’ of the Calgary Herald this morning. Someone who doesn’t follow politics closely would be left with the impression, from the headline, that the SA is so ”tough” the feds might take extraordinary action. No mention of emergency powers. Misleading.
@devenkarfield You’re mistaken about S33. It only allows for a legislature (fed or prov) to pass law notwithstanding s2 and s7-15 of the charter of rights and freedoms. It’s not a free standing “ignore the constitution entirely” clause.
@tyelland The Leger survey itself is interesting. Very strong support for gov’t increasing mental health supports, noticeable differences between younger/older respondents regarding rights of homeless
@petia_penn No, he meant that the last Russian in the group that was surrendering starting shooting at the Ukrainians. You can see it in the video, he rushes out shooting, and that’s when all the gunfire starts. The Ukrainian filming drops the camera, supposedly he was hit.
@tammyrobert@MChilliak Christchurch Mosque attack, for starters. The main thing about accelerationism is the belief in the inevitability of race war, and viewing it as a good thing. The terror attacks are framed as “defensive” actions against “white genocide” meant to provoke race war.
@TheStarPhoenix How many of these “wealthy developer doesn’t want to follow regulations” stories are we going to see from the Star Phoenix? Maybe you should just Drexel a column of his own?
If twitter does implode, it feel it’ll be like that episode of the Simpsons where marge ruins itchy & scratchy, so all the children kids stop watching and stumble outside, rubbing their eyes to pastorale in F major
@yuanyi_z Indeed. I’m not a constitutional scholar, but I can’t help wondering if a similar case might emerge if these terrible conditions persist. Do you think SCC today might find another vote on s7 grounds that wasn’t there in 2005?
@yuanyi_z …doesn’t a healthcare system incapable of a timely response to cancer also force people to choose to end their lives prematurely, for fear of the terrible pain from lack of treatment?
@yuanyi_z When I read this I can’t help but think of the reasoning used in Carter when striking down ss241b & 14 as violation of s7. If preventing assisted death caused some to prematurely commit suicide for fear of being incapable in the future, violating s7…
The widely shared claim that the Iranian regime has committed to executing 15,000 detained protesters is not true. Please stop sharing it. The Iranian regime is horrific, brutal and ruthless as it actually is. There's no need to make up stories.
@Nucciarone Could be! I’m not aware of any work done using very recent data on rulings. I believe the research I’m referring to used rulings from 1990-2000s.
