An alliance of diverse civic organisations in Brent working together to develop community leaders and build people power for social justice & the common good.
We recently held an Accountability Assembly with 140 community leaders from our Brent Citizens & Harrow Citizens members. We negotiated our people-powered Manifesto with @anton_georgiou from @BrentLD and with @MAsgharButt & @TCStephens from @BrentLabour
WEMBLEY MATTERS: Local community leaders, including school pupils, put Brent Council on Santa’s Naughty List following u-turn on Council Leader’s election pledge to make Brent a Living Wage Borough @Brent_Council@BrentCitizens@MAsgharButt#livingwage https://t.co/i4N2FmhQ5t
@MAsgharButt@EllieSouthwood Finally, for anyone who wants to dig deeper into the Living Wage Places schemes - Living Wage Zones, Living Wage Boroughs, Living Wage Cities - we recommend this resource: https://t.co/PQ5k5DcfhK
Thank you @MAsgharButt for attending our public action & offering to meet with us in January to review your administration’s commitments re: making Brent a Living Wage Borough! For the benefit of your followers, allow us to provide some context… 1/
We remain absolutely committed to championing fair wages across the borough. We are proud to be a London Living Wage accredited employer for nearly ten years and expect the suppliers we work with to adopt the same.
Accountability & transparency matter. We’re glad our collective action led to @MAsgharButt offering to meet & resolve the issues that arose since May. We look forward to working with him and @EllieSouthwood to combat in-work poverty in Brent. #NaughtyorNice🎅 #CommunityOrganising
Now, back to Monday's action. We went public with our concerns because the Council's tune changed after the elections: no more joint Action Team & Plan, no more focus on the @oldoakparkroyal - merely drop-in workshops for employers with optional @LivingWageUK accreditation 6/
For example, the Council may feel that, on its own, it cannot do much to ensure that the 56,000 jobs being created at the Old Oak Common & Park Royal pay the #LivingWage. However, by getting other employers & stakeholders on board, we can tackle this challenge together. 5/
A write up of the wonderful campaign, built by @westlondonzone and @Old_OakPrimary, to improve the #wormwoodscrubs park, in partnership with @LBHF and working closely with @_alexsanderson.

Congratulations to Cllr @anton_georgiou and his newly elected colleagues Hannah Matin & @paul_lorber1👉 we hope you'll work with us and help ensure that the Council's administration delivers on the commitments we secured at our Assembly on ESOL & the London Living Wage!
Thank you for your leadership and engagement with our members back around 2014 or so (time flies!) that proved crucial to making @Brent_Council a Living Wage Employer. Hundreds of pay rises and families uplifted from in-work poverty! We'll continue to organise 💪
Today I will be standing down and beginning a new chapter after 12 years as a councillor for Welsh Harp Ward in Brent.
I want to give a heartfelt thanks to residents, council staff, colleagues and stakeholders who I have had the pleasure to work with over the years 🧵
Commiserations to @TCStephens, who has always engaged very positively with our members on our priorities, incl. ESOL provision. When (not if!) we manage to make Brent a #LivingWage Borough, it will in no small part be thanks to his leadership this past year! Thank you & good luck
Congratulations on your re-election, @MAsgharButt. We look forward to working with you& your administration to deliver on our members' priorities: championing #LondonLivingWage across Brent with focus on social care & 56,000 new jobs @oldoakparkroyal and improving #ESOL provision
We ended with a delicious iftar meal provided by Masa Restaurant on Headstone Drive. All photos were taken by the brilliant @amandarosephoto who is local to NW London - do get in touch with her.

It was a joyful, moving and powerful evening of social action - politics at its best! We look forward to working and meeting regularly with whoever is elected to lead Brent Council next. Thank you to the candidates for taking part. Everyone: remember to vote this Thursday!
