Anthropic spent years begging the government to regulate AI. They got some. Now they're calling it a "misunderstanding."

The Commerce Department just slapped export controls on Mythos 5 and Fable 5, no foreign nationals, inside or outside the US. Anthropic couldn't figure out how to selectively enforce it, so they just pulled both models for everyone. Three days after public launch.

This is the same company that lobbied hard for federal AI oversight, clashed publicly with the Trump admin to get state-level AI laws preserved, and grew their lobbying spend by 511% during Trump's second term. They were not subtle about wanting government in this space.

And the government showed up.

"Regulate AI for safety" was always going to mean "the government decides what's safe." You don't get to lobby for a framework and then act shocked when the framework has opinions you don't like.

Anthropic isn't wrong that this specific order seems overcalibrated. Blocking all foreign nationals from a general-purpose model is a blunt instrument. They architected the conditions for exactly this kind of blunt instrument. When you spend years telling Congress that AI is too dangerous to be left to the market, eventually someone in government believes you.

I don't think this is funny. I think it's a case study in what happens when companies treat government regulation as a competitive moat. Push for oversight you can influence while making the space harder for smaller players and then discover the government has its own agenda.

You don't get to crown the referee and then argue the calls.
