It's Veterans Day in the U.S. What does it mean and where did it come from? Here's a good explainer from the NY Times that I am gifting to you about the evolution of the day: https://t.co/IvFaY32aRO
Our nation’s democratic system functioned last night and we have a new President-elect. All Americans are bound, whether we like the outcome or not, to accept the results of our elections. We now have a special responsibility, as citizens of the greatest nation on earth, to do everything we can to support and defend our Constitution, preserve the rule of law, and ensure that our institutions hold over these coming four years. Citizens across this country, our courts, members of the press and those serving in our federal, state and local governments must now be the guardrails of democracy.
And on this election day... another Jan 6 case is unsealed and on-the-docket
Adam Schrader. He's accused of entering Capitol amid the mob.. thru Senate wing door
Largest federal criminal prosecution in US history
This is how dictators destroy free nations. They threaten those who speak against them with death. We cannot entrust our country and our freedom to a petty, vindictive, cruel, unstable man who wants to be a tyrant. #Womenwillnotbesilenced#VoteKamala
A century ago, Germany’s democracy was hijacked by a bombastic and charismatic tyrant — and in this five-minute video, you’ll learn how he did it. Why did I produce this? Because I believe that history is speaking to us, and all too often, those who refuse to learn from it are doomed to repeat it.
As you watch, imagine filling out a Bingo card filled with Germany 1933/USA 2024 parallels: big rallies, rage-filled and hateful rhetoric, simple answers promising quick and easy solutions to complicated problems, empty promises of a great-again future, scapegoating outsiders, and political enemies silenced on day one. And notice the caring wisdom and concern from my German friends as they share these lessons from their dark history.
It’s hard to understand how Trump could, on the eve of a tight election, paint a picture of Liz Cheney before a firing squad by actually saying, “Let’s put her with a rifle standing there with nine barrels shooting at her, OK? And let’s see how she feels about it when the guns are trained on her face.” You can’t get into the mind of a dictator with an insatiable appetite for power — but you can recognize the playbook they all seem to follow.
Just watch this clip. It’s excerpted from my hourlong public television special “The Story of Fascism in Europe,” which is streaming free (and ad-free) at https://t.co/YA10kVH0V8. If you care about our democracy and love our country, it’s hard to stop watching.
When I produced this in 2018, I hoped this day would never come in our country. But November 5th is upon us. Please share this with anyone in your life who might need a reminder that the stakes are high...and this is very real.
NEW: FBI statement: "The FBI is aware of two videos falsely claiming to be from the FBI relating to election security, one stating the FBI has apprehended three linked groups committing ballot fraud and a second relating to the Second Gentleman. These videos are not authentic, are not from the FBI, and the content they depict is false"
Some of you may be considering sitting this election out, or voting for a third-party candidate, because you strongly disagree with Kamala Harris about Gaza.
This thread is for you 🧵
At Trump’s Sunday-night rally at Madison Square Garden, we caught a glimpse of the Republicans’ “other campaign,” writes @anneapplebaum. “This is the campaign that is psychologically preparing Americans for an assault on the electoral system”: https://t.co/SPV0FQk7jA
I’ve been all over the country in the last month.
And I get asked the same question, over and over again:
“I disagree with Kamala’s position on the war in Gaza. How can I vote for her?”
Here is my answer:
40 months in prison for Jan 6 defendant Jeremy Groseclose
Feds allege: As officers "tried to close a security door located on the east side of the Crypt, Groseclose and others prevented the door from closing by placing chairs, trash cans and other objects under the door"
“Harris becoming president may not be the best thing that could happen to conservatism,” writes @Peter_Wehner. “But if she becomes president, she will have prevented the worst thing that could happen to conservatism.” https://t.co/fyilxJoPsj
Justice Dept secures another Jan 6 guilty plea (nearly 950 total)
Joshua Dale's signed plea agreement acknowledges he and another person used a wooden historical marker as a battering ram inside Capitol complex

Rick Steves is not some sort of hair-on-fire political commentator. He's a really amazing travel writer/producer, and even he is saying this from what he has learned in his travels.
Many don’t realize that the first people Hitler sent to his concentration camps weren’t everyday Jewish citizens, but his political opponents. So, when Trump rants about retribution, locking up his opponents, and giving them “very long sentences,” I can’t help but take him seriously… because history teaches us that is what fascist dictators do during their “Day One” period to consolidate their power. (After all, if you’re hellbent on staying in power but aren’t likely to win the next election, you can’t have your political opponents running around free.)
To keep fascism out of our lives, vote for democracy!
I'm gifting this NTY article because this is an important aspect of the MAGA movement that too often is missed: If Trump wins, there will be violence. If Trump loses, there will be violence.
