The UK is closely following concerning developments in the Horn of Africa.
We fully support AU-led efforts towards de-escalation, dialogue and a peaceful resolution of differences.
Communications cut off as fighting intensifies in northern Ethiopia.
🚨 Hundreds injured, and scores of foreign tourists are currently trapped in the historic city of Lalibela.
Among them is a UK national who spoke to the BBC’s Kalkidan Yibeltal about his experience.
I am following with deep concern the situation in Tigray and in the neighbouring regions of Afar and Amhara, where hostilities have once again broken out. I extend my heartfelt plea to all parties to choose the path of dialogue. Armed conflict never solves problems, but only worsens them leaving in its wake a trail of death, destruction and resentment. Only honest engagement can lay the foundations for lasting peace. It is my fervent hope that the international community will offer its generous and timely contribution to ensuring that all humanitarian aid be provided to those in need.
Happy Ethiopian New Year to all Ethiopian celebrating from all of us here at the British Embassy Addis Ababa!

Interesting that @DisneyPlus is happy to take my money, but I’m somehow “ineligible” to change my password because I’ve entered the wrong one. Surely that’s the whole point of a password reset? Happy to charge me, not so keen on letting me access what I’m paying for.
Last week, the UK Special Representative and political colleagues visited Khartoum for the first time since the outbreak of conflict over three years ago. We remain committed to the Sudanese people. We will not look away at this critical time.
Big thank you to Addis Ababa’s phenomenally talented cultural ambassadors and the Addis Ababa Tourism Commission for visiting the British Embassy this morning to offer 🇪🇹 New Year blessings.
A beautiful display of #Ethiopian#culture.
Melkam #Enkutatash! Melkam Addis Amet!
Thank you @MFAEthiopia & 🇪🇹 Ministry of Culture for the visit to @UKinEthiopia today to offer New Year blessings
Delighted to welcome HE Director-General Ambassador Meles & Mr Tadesse Adane to the 🇬🇧 Embassy
Melkam Addis Amet!
Charge d’Affairs Robin Milton was kindly hosted by @abdulqader_d in Mosul. Mosul’s recovery and rapid growth are a powerful testament to the resilience of its people after the devastation caused by Da’esh. They discussed shared priorities and opportunities for future cooperation.
I met with health workers and families facing the devastating realities of climate shocks in Afar. Their daily reality is so different to mine but their hopes are the same. Parents want their children to be safe and able to thrive.
So pleased that @kirstyjmcneill could witness some of the powerful ways @UKinEthiopia partners with 🇪🇹 to improve the health and wellbeing of women, girls & communities at risk
From vaccines & nutrition to reproductive health services and support for survivors of violence, the UK is partnering with 🇪🇹 to ensure no one is left behind.
In #Afar, @kirstyjmcneill saw how this partnership is helping women & children affected by El Niño. 🇬🇧🇪🇹

As 🇪🇹 works to strengthen the resilience of communities to climate shocks, @kirstyjmcneill Minister for Development and Africa, saw how the @FCDOGovUK and our partners are supporting the Government of Ethiopia to reach those most affected.
