@ContraPoints The book Aestheticism, Nabokov and Lolita (Andrews) argues N. is critiquing a form of aestheticism that ignores individual uniqueness. Humbert replaces the real Lolita with an aesthetic image and the moralist author of the preface uses Lolita for a moral lesson. Both use Lolita.

@JoyceCarolOates Sometimes our intuition knows things our conscious mind doesn't (the example from Kahneman's book of the firefighter who felt uneasy just before the building collapsed). Sometimes we should override our fast intuition but sometimes it's good to "trust our gut". Life is tough.

@daintysloth Not sure if this is true but I read someone else's theory that seemed plausible: there's not a lot of downside to adding a "step-family" element to a video since the people who are into it will watch and the people who are not will still watch and just ignore the story part.

We can imagine "good people" killing (for justified reasons, by accident, etc.) but not raping.

@suchnerve In regard to movies specifically: Because movies often give the illusion of simply recording "real life" I think lots of people greatly underestimate how many intentional decisions are made when making them and all the opportunities for inserting subtle meaning into them.
