Von Miller reveals after Texas A&M coach Mike Sherman suspended him, he packed everything he owned into his truck and started driving to Florida to transfer, when he called his he dad told him not to quit, so he turned around and led the nation with 17.5 sacks the next season
“I had everything I owned in this blanket, and I went to my car. I threw it in the back and I’m driving home. I called my daddy. I’m like, ‘Daddy, man, I’m leaving. Coach Sherman kicked me off the team. I ain’t coming back until I do this and that.’”
“I’m thinking my dad is going, ‘All right, we’re going to find something else.’ He said, ‘Pull that truck over, turn around, and go back to school. You’re not quitting.’”
“I was like, ‘That was not the answer I was looking for.’ He was like, ‘You’re not just about to quit when it gets hard. You’re going to turn that truck back around. You’re going to go back to school and you’re going to fix it.’”
“I had tears going down my face. I was like, ‘Man, this is going to be so hard to fix all of this.’ I turned around. We had a meeting. Coach Sherman told my dad the exact same thing that he told me, and my dad agreed with Coach Sherman.”
“There was nowhere I could go. I just had to face the music. I had to face the truth. That spring was a hard one, but I got my grades up. I made it to all my classes. I went through the checklist of everything Coach Sherman wanted me to do.”
“That following year, my junior year, was the best year that I had up until that day. I led the nation in sacks. I had 17 and a half sacks. My life had totally changed. That was all a testament to running straight through the storm. The shortest way through the storm is straight. I put my head down and I worked, and my life totally changed that offseason.”
The '97 Aggies were the quintessential A&M team IMO; tough as nails, all heart ... a team!
Names like John David Crow, Von Miller, and Johnny Manziel will forever stick with Aggies.
Their play will see to it that they are enshrined in our lore and talked about for decades to come with friends over dinner and our children when they continue our legacy.
Most players miss the spot light but for a moment, and I was recently reminded of this as I watched players I knew and loved at the time make real differences next to the names even Bristol knows.
ESPN knows Dante Hall, Shane Lechler, and Dat Nguyen; Aggies remember the spirit that the supporting players around them embodied that welled up in them and poured out on the field.
This overflow of effort, determination, and selflessness molded the team to take on traits praised as all heart and tough as nails.
This clip is to spotlight the differences those players made living out those traits on the field.
Starting off you will see Dante Hall, the human joystick, engaging the 12th Man with a big run who had been eagerly awaiting fireworks.
But someone else had a cheat code today - Up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, B, A, Start was entered for D' Andre "Tiki" Hardeman!
He was in bruiser mode all day and just after Hall busts a run, Tiki gashes them up the middle - probably unsuspecting to the horns - to take a commanding lead.
Playing on this day and giving a valiant effort for the horns was Ricky Williams, '98 Heisman Trophy winner, who stacked 183 yds on the day!
But Dante would not be denied the win dropping 52 on the horns. In combination, Hall, Tiki, and another familiar name, Sir Parker, would flex 278 yds to burn off all the turkey from the day before.
The previous year Texas had beaten us like Big Bertha, so in '97 all cards were on the table. The end around to Chris Cole brought the Aggies already standing to attention earning the Ags a much needed first down.
Not a flashy QB, only completing 111 passes for 1400 yds, this lob took moxie on a drenched day, and proved to be one of Stewart's most important of the year.
A memory he will share at Thanksgivings to come with friends, and use as a trump card for any foe, Stewarts resilience, a defining feature of this team, would impart the same to the faithful.
Derrick Spiller lead the team with 17.4 YPC, and on a tough catching day, another name delivers when called upon. A rumbler to this day, the announcer precisely characterizes, Dan Campbell creates his own story.
His version will surely wow the grandkids, but also one he can tell in a locker room full of Detroit Lions before he leads them out of an NFL tunnel as their head coach.
The ultimate selfless player is that which dawns the 12 on their Jersey. Chad Franzen then shows us exactly how to play and gives us a direct look into the soul of this team.
His no holds barred run - finished off with a collision Texas State Troopers would look on with bewildered at how the horn survived - leaves no doubt this team was all heart.
You've heard of "The Hit" delivered by Quentin Coryatt, Shun Horn recreated the play to figuratively, although some might argue literally, "saw 'em off".
Of course Dat was huge, but Webster got his piece of the pie with the fumble recovery that relegated the horns to the kids table as he exemplified the team mentality.
Finally, Tiki takes his bow for smoking the horns and carving them up for 121 yds on the day, gritting out a first down to take the yearly bragging rights.
RC Slocum would gain a different badge with this win as it made him the winningest coach in A&M history over taking Homer Norton (HC '34-'47) with 83 wins.
He would go on to earn 123 in total and still reigns to this day!

New Texas A&M pitching coach Max Weiner says the university's military history played a factor in him coming to Aggieland 👍 #GigEm
I’m deeming July 25th National Coaches Day. It’s been decided. Spread the word and let’s get it going - 600 read tweets at a time. Let’s recognize youth, HS, college and pro coaches we love or have made an impact on us.
To meet our rising costs, @costplusdrugs will be increasing our pharmacy fill fee from $3 to $5 as of Sept 1, 2023. We held off as long as we could but our costs have been above our fee for months.
One way to counteract this increase is to work with your prescriber to purchase enough medication to cover a longer period. Your price per pill will decline when you order medication for a longer period (up to 360 days ).
In addition, the pharmacy fee for our network will not increase, so please check https://t.co/jEJmObtLEi to see if there is an independent pharmacy near you where you can fill and pick-up your prescription.
Thank you for your support of @costplusdrugs
Good morning to everyone except Oakland, @Athletics fans and anyone thinking that team is anything other than a giant fraud. Your stadium sucks, your team will be leaving soon & you still employ a 🐀 pitcher terrified to face his old team. Pathetic. #ForTheH🔥🤘🏼
