He said this one surprises everyone because it sounds backward.

Most TVs ship with sharpness set to 50 out of 100. People assume "more sharpness = sharper picture." It doesn't. What the sharpness setting actually does is add artificial edge enhancement white halos around edges and exaggerated outlines that make the image look harsher, noisier, and more processed than the source material.

Modern 4K content is already sharp. The resolution handles that. Adding artificial sharpness on top of an already sharp signal doesn't add detail it creates visual noise. Faces look unnaturally textured. Skin looks rough and grainy. Hair looks crunchy. Fine patterns shimmer and buzz.

He turned my sharpness down to 5. On some TVs he sets it to zero.

"Look at a close-up of a face with sharpness at 50. Then look at it at 5. The difference is staggering. At 50, every pore and blemish is exaggerated. At 5, you see actual skin the way the cinematographer lit it and the colorist graded it."

He said if you see other settings labeled "Detail Enhancer," "Super Resolution," or "Edge Enhancement" in the same menu, turn those off too. They're all variations of the same problem artificial processing that degrades the image while pretending to improve it.

Disgusting...but better trapped on this surface than your lungs? All homes/schools should use filtration all the time.
