The people of Nairobi need change. They need responsible leadership, accountability, and a government that values human life. Today, a 14-storey building collapsed in Eastleigh, leaving several people trapped inside. My prayers are with the families, friends, and relatives of those trapped inside, and I hope for their safe rescue. This tragedy raises serious concerns about corruption, impunity, and failures within City Hall’s planning and construction oversight departments. When buildings collapse and lives are endangered without meaningful action, it demonstrates a failure of leadership and a government that is not adequately protecting its people.
When I was serving in the Environment Department, I tried to stop illegal construction activities involving excavation from one beacon to another. My efforts were met with hostility from my former boss, who summoned the entire City Hall government to a meeting at Charter Hall. Those present included CECs, County Chief Officers, Sub-County Administrators, Ward Administrators, all Environment Officers and his handlers .
During that meeting, two innocent Environment Officers were suspended for carrying out their professional duties of stopping an illegal excavation at Roysambu Subcounty and south C . A few months later, a building collapsed in South C, killing three people. I have evidence relating to these events, and I am prepared to present it through the appropriate channels.
I was warned to keep off construction sites and even instructed not to undertake environmental work that required the involvement of our technical experts. This raises serious questions about whether professionals are being allowed to perform their duties independently and whether public safety is being sacrificed to protect other interests.
Developers in Nairobi have also raised serious concerns about the approval process. I have information alleging that some developers spend millions of shillings to obtain building approvals, with figures reportedly reaching at least KSh 56 million and, in the case of some foreign developers Chinese and others, KSh 92 million or more. These allegations must be independently investigated, and anyone found engaging in corruption must be held accountable.
The approval of buildings must be guided by qualified professionals, technical assessments, and strict compliance with safety standards not political influence. No single individual should override the professional judgment of experts when the lives of Nairobi residents are at stake.
I therefore appeal to His Excellency the President to intervene and help restore order and accountability in Nairobi’s construction sector, including by ensuring that qualified experts from the national government support independent investigations and the enforcement of building safety regulations.
I am also aware of threats and intimidation against me. I have already recorded a statement with the police concerning two politicians whom I have implicated, and I intend to record a further statement at DCI Headquarters. I call upon the relevant security agencies to investigate these concerns and ensure my safety, as well as the safety of everyone who dares to speak out against wrongdoing.
Nairobi needs fair politics not corruption, intimidation, or the loss of innocent lives.
Our people deserve leadership that protects them. Our professionals deserve the freedom to do their jobs without fear. Our developers deserve a transparent and fair approval process. Above all, every Nairobi resident deserves to live and work in a city where human life is valued above money and political interests.
Nairobi needs change. Nairobi needs accountability. Nairobi deserves leadership that puts people first.
