The issue of the Preakness and the Triple Crown is a microcosm of an issue that has been ongoing in racing for a long time. Horses don’t run anymore. I remember in 2006 when Barbaro was coming into the Derby off a five week “layoff” it was one of the most talked about topics going into the Derby. Now, if a horse went in off three weeks, people would ask “is that enough time?”
Derby horses averaged 9 starts going into the Derby 20 years ago, that average is now 5. Horses run their final Breeders Cup prep in August. In New York, there isn’t enough support for a Whitney-Woodward-Jockey Club Gold Cup schedule anymore. In the 1980’s they ran those races and the Marlboro Cup in a 10 week period.
If we continue to adjust schedules to accommodate horses running less and less, horses will continue to run less and less. Make the gap between Triple Crown races four weeks and in a few years people will want it to be six weeks.
Stop racing to breed. Breed to race.

With Sovereignty and Journalism returning on Saturday and both likely to see a four or five race campaign over the next seven months, it is incredible how much the sport has changed.
30 years ago, horses like them could lose their first start back and nobody would say anything. It was the start of a long campaign and the horse can't be fully cranked every single time.
Now, by running horses so infrequently, horses like this are expected to win all their starts. They are not allowed to lose anymore. If they do, they are not as great as we thought. The real fascinating thing is the people who run their horses so infrequently, hoping to protect their legacy and prospects as a stallion are the people who have created this "must win" sentiment by running them so infrequently. It's actually counter-productive.
Bill Mott on Sovereignty: “He’s going to go to Churchill for a couple weeks, and then he’ll wind up going to Saratoga, and he’ll probably train at Saratoga up to the Stephen Foster.”

Sovereignty has the most immaculate @RagozinSheets of any horse I have ever seen with that many races.
He has run 9 times and in every start but one, he has run faster than the race before it. The only one he did not run faster, he paired up the exact same number. You just don't see a sheet like that.
Goodbye, FROSTED (Tapit - Fast Cookie, by Deputy Minister), whose death due to laminitis was reported by @DarleyAmerica .
What a racehorse FROSTED was! And, as Godolphin's Dan Pride stated in the release, he was a huge fan favorite at Jonabell.
Condolences to all who loved him.
Delivery day! Congratulations to @godolphin on the 5 Eclipse Award trophies we delivered today, including Sovereignty’s Horse of the Year trophy! Time to build another trophy case. #EclipseAwards#Sovereignty

.@JamesTalarico: For 50 years, the religious right convinced our fellow Christians that the most important issues were abortion and gay marriage—two issues that aren't mentioned in the Bible.
Jesus tells us exactly how we're going to be judged: by feeding the hungry, by healing the sick, and by welcoming the stranger.
Don’t tell me what you believe. Show me how you treat other people, and I’ll tell you what you believe. Jesus gave us two commandments: love God and love neighbor.
There was no exception to that second commandment regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, immigration status, or religious affiliation.
MSNBC is live defending the second amendment and the conservatives on twitter are explaining that the existence of a firearm in an interaction with a federal agent is a justifiable death sentence. I’m beginning to feel like no one actually believes anything
