The Catholic Church in South Korea has become one of the most remarkable growth stories in the modern Church.

In the 1960s, South Korea had roughly half a million Catholics. Today, the number has passed 6 million, representing about 11.4% of the country’s population. In a highly modern, technologically advanced, and increasingly secular society, the Church has not disappeared. It has grown.

What makes Korean Catholic history even more interestint is that the faith first took root there in an unusual way. Catholicism entered Korea largely through lay scholars who discovered Christian writings, studied them, and began spreading the faith before a stable missionary presence was established. The Korean Church was later shaped by persecution, martyrdom, sacrifice, and generations of believers who preserved the faith at great personal cost.

That history still matters today. South Korea now has thousands of priests, active parishes, Catholic schools, hospitals, charities, and a growing public Catholic presence. The country is also preparing to host World Youth Day in Seoul in 2027, placing Korean Catholicism before the eyes of the universal Church.

The lesson is simple: modernity does not erase the need for God. A society can have technology, wealth, education, and global influence, yet the human soul still hungers for truth, grace, beauty, and eternal life.

South Korea is proving that the Church can still grow in the modern world.

Approved miracle: the Holy Face of Jesus appears on the Blessed Sacrament. 🙏

The Vatican officially recognized a Eucharistic miracle in India, 12 years after it occurred. 🙏

On Nov. 15, 2013, during Mass at Christ the King Church in Vilakkannur, Kerala, the Holy Face of Jesus appeared on a Eucharistic host.

After years of evaluation, the Vatican confirmed its authenticity in May 2025.

Christ is truly present in the Eucharist.

Did you know Jesus in the Eucharist saved an island from a tsunami? 🙏

January 31, 1906, an 8.8-magnitude earthquake struck Colombia, sending a tsunami toward the island of Tumaco.

As the sea pulled back and a wall of water approached, the people ran to the church. After consuming the hosts in the tabernacle, Brother Gerardo carried the Eucharist to the beach, raised the Sacred Host, and blessed the incoming wave.

The tsunami lost its force. The waters reached only waist-high, and the town was spared.

To this day, Tumaco remembers this Eucharistic miracle with gratitude — a powerful reminder that Christ has authority over every storm.

26 DE JUNIO| San José María tuvo una vida difícil en sus primeros años de vida. A los dos años sufrió de una meningitis de la cual salió bien gracias a las oraciones de su madre al Sagrado Corazón. Sus tres hermanas fallecieron durante la infancia. Su familia tenia buena solvencia económica pero quedó en la ruina.
Al finalizar sus estudios de bachillerato en 1917, José María enfrentó una crisis: las dudas propias de la adolescencia; la ruina de su padre; la muerte de sus hermanas; el cambio de colegios y de amistades. Mientras el sentía rebeldía, sus padres lo impresionaban con serenidad y confianza en la Providencia.
Durante una nevada en el invierno de 1917, José María Escrivá se encontraba en la calle Mayor y muy cerca del colegio de los hermanos maristas, vio de repente a «unos religiosos Carmelitas, descalzos sobre la nieve». Esta imagen lo llevó a cuestionarse: «Si otros hacen tantos sacrificios por Dios y por el prójimo, ¿no voy a ser yo capaz de ofrecerle algo?». En este momento pensó en ser sacerdote.
