This is not "a few bad apples," this is standard operating procedure for cops. I appeal to everyone's ordinary personal interaction with police for this. We all know it's true. We've all experienced it or have family or friends who've been victimized by police. No matter how police lobbyists try to reframe reality, the peristent, everyday mistreatment of the public by popo is eventually gunna catch up with US law inforcement. Interesting to see a number of commenters suggesting that I should have stood aside and let the work continue.

They perhaps don't realise (and hadn't bothered to find out) that there had been two previous occasions when Yorkshire Water contractors had carved up our road and left a mess behind. It's an unadopted road and the residents have to pay for the maintenance. We had spent a fortune on repairs and here was Yorkshire Water, without notice, attempting to dig up the street for a third time with no guarantees that they wouldn't leave another mess for us to repair.

I had contacted YW by all available means, asking for a written guarantee that reinstatement would be carried out in accordance with the statutory code. None was forthcoming, which left me no option but to refuse to allow the non-urgent work to go ahead.

Technically (and in law) the contractors were trespassing - having not given the required notice to enter private property. Digging without authorisation amounted to criminal damage and a civil Tort (harm).

I was within my rights to refuse to allow the works to go ahead, and make no apologies for refusing to be bullied by arrogant utilities using cowboy thugs in an attempt to bypass the law.
