A Henry Ford Health study found a 50 percent reduction in deaths among COVID patients treated with hydroxychloroquine compared to those who were not.

That finding got buried under a different study, the Surgisphere data published in The Lancet, which governments and the WHO used to reshape COVID-19 policy almost overnight. A Guardian investigation later revealed that Surgisphere, the tiny US company behind the data, had a staff that appeared to include a science fiction writer and an adult content model. The Lancet study was retracted.

By then the damage was done. Hydroxychloroquine got branded dangerous, the narrative held, and the FDA needed exactly that narrative to justify an Emergency Use Authorization for the vaccine, which required no other treatment be shown to work.
