I paid my last respects to Mzee David Wambua Ngila, the father-in-law of my friend, Environment PS Eng Festus Ng'eno at Kilungu, Makueni County.
Mzee Ngila was a dedicated teacher in his heyday and a man of great faith, an attribute he bequeathed his children who include my classmate and family friend, Karen. May she and the entire family find comfort in the Lord.

Marsabit County is on the brink of a transformative era as the Principal Secretary for the Arid and Semi-Arid Lands (ASAL) and Regional Development, Hon. @harsama_kello and I announced the inception of the Wolda Integrated Agro-pastoralism Development Project, a collaborative effort between the County Government of Marsabit and the National Government. This groundbreaking initiative aims to provide a sustainable solution to the perennial drought challenges that have plagued the region.
We met to deliberate on the project's implementation, a meeting that marked a significant step forward in the journey towards resilience and prosperity for the pastoral communities.
The Walda Project is set to revolutionize the traditional pastoral practices by establishing feedlots as a reliable food source for livestock during drought periods. Spread over a minimum of 5,000 hectares, the project will also see the construction of five mega dams with the capacity to hold 2 million cubic meters of water, ensuring a year-round water supply. Additionally, the project plans to sink five boreholes to serve as an alternative water source should the dams and water pans run dry.
Following water security, the project's next phase will focus on fodder development and the introduction of special livestock breeding programs aimed at enhancing the quality of the local livestock breeds. Agricultural development is also on the agenda, with plans to cultivate food crops such as cereals and vegetables. Environmental conservation is another critical component, with a variety of trees set to be planted to maintain ecological balance.
The establishment of a research center is another cornerstone of the Walda Project. Here, specialists will conduct in-depth research on livestock breeds and crops, ensuring the adoption of best practices and the latest innovations in pastoral farming. Monitoring and evaluation mechanisms will be integrated to track the project's progress and impact.
I express my gratitude to President @WilliamsRuto for initiating such a transformative project in Marsabit County. I attribute the selection of Walda as the project site to the area's access to streams flowing from the Ethiopian highlands, fertile soil, and expansive land. The project's multifaceted approach is good, particularly the improvement of livestock breeds through the proposed research center and the training of local farmers. Recalling the severe impact of drought, where up to 80% of pastoral livelihoods were lost, I hail the Walda Project as a crucial lifeline for the community.
The Wolda Project ushers in a new chapter of hope for Marsabit. As we face the adversities brought on by climate change, it's time to adapt and build a future where our people are not only surviving but thriving.
PS Harsama echoed my sentiments, highlighting President Ruto's commitment to empowering pastoralists and mitigating the effects of climate change. He emphasized that ASAL counties have borne the brunt of climate-induced losses and that the president's vision for the feedlot program, which will extend to 31 ASAL counties, is a testament to the government's resolve to change the narrative around droughts and livestock loss. Marsabit, he noted, was chosen to spearhead the project due to its readiness to implement the necessary changes.
"We are here to chart a path of resilience and prosperity. This project is a beacon of innovation that will not only combat the cycle of drought but also empower our communities through sustainable development," the PS remarked.
The ambitious project, which is set to stock over 10,000 heads of cattle, comes with a substantial price tag of Ksh. 2.75 billion. The implementation of the project will be overseen by the Ewaso Ngiro North River Basin Development Authority in collaboration with county Government of Marsabit, bringing together expertise and resources to ensure its success.

The December edition of Gaddis Gamme was an impactful and transformative event, organized through the office of the First Lady of Marsabit County and the Mama Guyo Foundation. The camp, which commenced on December 5, 2023, and ended today has provided a platform for 200 girls from across Moyale sub-county to engage in comprehensive learning and empowerment sessions.
Under the auspices of the Mama Guyo Foundation, the girls have participated in a diverse range of activities and workshops aimed at educating and inspiring them on critical issues. Topics covered include the dangers of female genital mutilation, drug and substance abuse, menstrual hygiene, and the constitutional rights outlined in the Kenyan Constitution of 2010 in relation to FGM. Additionally, the program has offered essential guidance on career paths, the significance of girl child education, and the detrimental impacts of early marriage.
My office, with the support of @MamaGuyoFdn , County Government of Marsabit and other partners has been instrumental in providing these young women with a platform for growth, empowerment, and education.
Throughout the event, the girls have showcased their talent and resilience through powerful presentations, expressing their thoughts and experiences through poignant songs and poems. Their performances have shed light on the negative impact of early marriage, emphasized the importance of educating the girl child, and called for increased investment in the potential of every girl. The resounding message echoing through the event has been "Girls Power!"
As the event continued, the atmosphere was charged with enthusiasm and determination. The ongoing display of talent, resilience, and unwavering spirit at the event serves as a testament to the incredible potential inherent in every girl, thanks to the support and guidance provided by the Mama Guyo Foundation.
The graduation ceremony for girls from Gaddis Gamme is a powerful symbol of hope and progress, and it is poised to leave a lasting impact on the lives of the participants and the community at large.
