To live here, you need to know there isn't one #Germany, there's 16 different flavours.

Things only get weird when you move to Bavaria to be told it's "not really" Germany.

Weirder, move to Nürnberg, in Bavaria, and suddenly you're in Franken.

German geography is tricky.

Having come to #Germany with zero German, learning the language was a process of trial and error, mostly error.

For example, one very cold day, I told a receptionist at the gym "Ich bin Kalt" (I'm frigid) instead of "Mir ist Kalt" (I'm cold).

Embarrassment is a good teacher.

I thought one of the hardest German words was "Eichhörnchen". Funnily enough, the translation "Squirrel" is equally hard for Germans.

Once I learned "Eichhörnchen", my father-in-law suggested I also try the Bayrisch version, "Oachkatzl".

Bayrisch is German on hard mode.

The trick to learning German in Germany: if you find it hard to pronounce any of the words, just move to another part of the country.

They may have fewer umlauts.
