President Bola Tinubu has ordered an investigation into how a fake government agency was listed in Nigeria’s 2026 budget and earmarked to receive nearly $1 million.

The agency, named the Presidential Foreign Intervention Promotion Council, was reportedly allocated about 1.3 billion naira, around $944,300, despite not being legally recognised by the Nigerian government.

Tinubu’s office said the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, ICPC, has been directed to investigate the matter and submit its findings within 30 days.

The probe will examine alleged forged appointment letters, false claims of presidential appointment, attempts to secure official recognition, diplomatic support and visa facilitation.

Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga described Adeniyi Adeyemi Matthew, who allegedly claimed to be the agency’s director, as a “con artist” with a history of fraudulent misrepresentation.

The presidency insists no government funds were released to the fake agency, but critics are questioning how it appeared in the national spending plan.

Adeyemi is expected in court on July 27 on charges including forgery of official documents, seeking recognition for a fake government agency and opening multiple bank accounts in its name. #MMINews #Nigeria
