It’s always good to see discussion about advances in home cinema technology, particularly the new Kaleidescape. However, the explanation of chroma subsampling in this video is incorrect and needs correcting.
Chroma subsampling reduces colour detail while retaining full brightness detail, or luma. For a 4K UHD image measuring 3840 × 2160, the formats compare as follows:
4:4:4: Full 4K luma and full 4K chroma—3840 × 2160 for each.
4:2:2: Full 4K luma, with half the horizontal chroma resolution and full vertical chroma resolution—1920 × 2160.
4:2:0: Full 4K luma, with half the chroma resolution in both directions—1920 × 1080, effectively Full HD colour resolution. This is what 4K UHD Blu-ray uses.
4:1:1: Full luma resolution, with one-quarter of the horizontal chroma resolution and full vertical chroma resolution. Applied to a 4K image, that would mean 960 × 2160 chroma.
Those chroma dimensions apply to each of the two colour-difference channels. Crucially, 4:1:1 and 4:2:0 contain the same number of chroma samples; they distribute them differently.
The 4:1:1 format shown on your slide was used in older standard-definition recording formats, including NTSC DV and Sony’s DVCAM
This distinction matters: 4:2:0 does not turn a 4K picture into an HD picture. It retains 4K brightness detail while storing colour at a lower resolution. Likewise, converting a 4:2:0 source to a 4:4:4 output does not restore the original colour detail that was discarded; the missing samples have to be interpolated.
The @Kaleidescape K gives you what was originally there, with the only true 4K image in the consumer space. Disc is not true 4K.

@hdreport Historically that means it’s time for a new format…
My Journey starting in 1986…
100+ VHS < Laser Disc
300+ Laser Disc < DVD
400+ DVD < Blu Ray
600+ Blu Ray < 4K UHD
300+ on 4K UHD &
713 4K HDR on @kaleidescape
On the #Dork scale I give it a 5.5 as a stand alone season but reserve the right to speculate/hope in the future we look back and give it a 6 because Laterns was the catalyst to John Stewart becoming the RDJ/Tony Stark of the James Gunn DCU.
A great stand alone True Detective type comic based season that set up John Stewart to potentially be the most powerful character in the DCU.
Hey there HT nerds of the Twitter-verse!!
