Dwyane Wade says after getting his meniscus removed at 19, before getting drafted the doctors told the Heat he would only have 5 good years, and after that his knee would be an issue 😳

“Doc said he told the Heat, ‘he will have 5 good years. Then after that the knee would become an issue. He wasn’t lying. Had about 5 good years then my knee became an issue. I had multiple knee surgeries after that. I have an incredible tolerance for pain. I played through things I know a lot of guys wouldn’t play through. So I was told that

"Bobby Portis was almost unplayable."

I decided to do a deeper dive. Let's look at what the actual impact data says.

What Portis did last season (per 75, via databallr):

▸ 21.1 points — 87th percentile
▸ 45.6% from 3 on real volume (99th percentile) & one of the very best shooters in the ENTIRE league last year
▸ 9.9 rebounds (90th percentile)
▸ 96th percentile ball security
▸ +0.9 offensive RAPM which is top-12% measurable offensive impact, adjusted for teammates & opponents
▸ And he did all of it on just 12% on-ball usage which is elite production while barely touching the ball

Now the part I'll concede is that the defense was bad. Bottom 10-15% by every defensive metric.

But here's where "unplayable" falls apart: his overall RAPM & the single best all-in-one "was he a net positive or negative" metric was 50th percentile. DEAD LEAGUE AVERAGE. His elite offense fully paid the bill for his defense, on a 32-50 team that dragged everyone's raw numbers down.

Average impact ≠ unplayable.

Milwaukee's problem was asking Portis to anchor bench defenses. Miami doesn't have that problem while Bam and Giannis exist. In Miami, his job description is exclusively the 99th percentile stuff.

BP is about to be one of the best bench bigs in the East.

Take Derozan Beal Klay or Lavine as long as they're on minimum contracts
Be patient and prepare for next year's better team build
