An excellent speech from @SarahChampionMP in last week's Westminster Hall debate on #pEPR
We're grateful to Sarah for clearly outlining how the current pEPR proposals, specifically the fees based on weight, will unfairly penalise UK-manufactured glass packaging.
🔁 Is reuse the future for glass packaging?
In his latest article for @edie, Nick Kirk, Technical Director at British Glass, explores the potential for glass reuse systems in the UK – and what needs to happen to make them work.

🔹Costs from recent tax changes already hitting sector
🔹Risk of being charged twice for recycling via #pEPR and commercial waste services
🔹Suppliers passing costs on to businesses and customers, fuelling inflation
🔹Disproportionate fees for more recyclable materials like glass
🚨“Triple whammy” warning from glass and hospitality sectors on packaging tax, in joint letter to PM.
Pubs, restaurants and hotels are sounding the alarm over the Government’s proposed packaging tax, warning it could drive many out of business.

📢 In an article for @Glass_Int, Nick Kirk, discusses the serious consequences of the Gov's new #pEPR scheme, as the weight-based system distorts the market, inflates costs for consumers, and puts pressure on UK manufacturing and jobs.

We are grateful for the continued support of @SarahChampionMP on the issue of #pEPR.
If unchanged, the policy risks driving brands away from glass and towards less recyclable materials, threatening UK jobs, and undermining progress toward a truly circular economy.
Big day in Parliament; trying to ban puppy, cat & ferret smuggling, then stop all human rights abuses in GB Energy & last but probably most significant locally - trying to stop the crazy charges put on glass that could put our manufacturers out of business!
🚨@SarahChampionMP will lead a Westminster Hall debate on Wednesday 14th May | 2:30pm - 4:00pm, on the impact of packaging Extended Producer Responsibility (pEPR) on the glass sector.
Last week we were in Westminster with @SarahChampionMP to discuss #pEPR and the future of UK glass packaging.
Thank you to the offices of @YvetteCooperMP and @DanJarvisMBE, and to @ChrisMcDonaldMP and Gareth Snell MP, for taking the time to meet with us and hear our concerns.

A new glass tax came into force in the UK on 1 April 2025. It is part of the Packaging Extended Producer Responsibility aimed at encouraging recycling.
Unfortunately, it also adds up to an extra 10p on a newly manufactured glass bottle. This will lead to producers moving to more plastic containers, which would have a huge impact on jobs in the glass industry and the environment.
