Stripped of their leaves in winter, trees reveal their true shape and form, every curve of bough and twig exposed. In the summer you barely notice these beeches on the hill. In winter they're a family of three, branches touching and arching, beautiful and intricate in the snow.
There's such a delicate beauty in hoar frost, transforming the landscape into a bright, glittering place. This is the narrow lane down to the pretty #peakdistrict village of Froggatt, looking perfect with the last coppery leaves of this old beech tree glowing against the white.
The more I read the news, the more I retreat to the woods. Nature is undemanding, quietly performing complex, beautiful, daily miracles, whether or not we notice. Out here with the trees, there’s an odd reassurance that comes from feeling how insignificant we are, how fleeting.
