A2: I think we also need to be mindful that failing to provide scaffolds isn’t challenging. I’ve worked with teachers who are fearful that scaffolding always means watering down the curriculum. Students often need scaffolds to access content. It’s a balance! #CarolinaTESOLchat
A2: Appropriate scaffolding allows students to think critically and access challenging, grade-level content.I think that if students aren’t working with the same content as their English speaking peers, then they aren’t really being provided with scaffolds. #CarolinaTESOLchat

A2: I’ve experienced barriers to communication when translated materials aren’t fully comprehensible, even though they are in the parents’ native language. Educational jargon and content specific language can make communication unclear and challenging. #CarolinaTESOLchat
A1: I was excited to read the information about action step 3, challenging colleagues’ thinking to help them recognize ELs’ assets. So often it can be difficult to be an advocate for students when colleagues and co-teachers have views different than my own. #CarolinaTESOLchat
@MrsKatieCrook Agreed! I think the steps outlined in Chapter 1 will really help me have productive conversations with colleagues that don’t feel confrontational. When you’re excited to advocate for students, it can be easy to push too hard or skip ahead to the final steps.
