Calvinism is often rejected based on what people have been told it teaches rather than what it actually teaches.

“If God ordains everything, God is the author of evil.”

No. The crucifixion was according to God’s definite plan, yet those who crucified Christ were guilty (Acts 2:23; 4:27–28).

God ordained it.
Men committed the evil.
God remained holy.
Men remained responsible.

“So we’re robots?”

No. People genuinely choose according to their desires. Joseph’s brothers intended evil. God intended the same event for good (Gen. 50:20).

“Calvinism says people want Jesus but God won’t let them come.”

No. Jesus said no one CAN come unless the Father draws him (John 6:44). The problem isn’t sinners begging for Christ while God refuses them. Apart from grace, no one seeks God (Rom. 3:10–12).

“But I chose Jesus!”

Yes. Calvinism doesn’t deny that you chose Christ. It asks why.

Was the decisive difference something better in you, or was it grace?

“So election makes evangelism pointless.”

Paul preached election AND evangelized relentlessly. He even endured everything “for the sake of the elect” (2 Tim. 2:10).

“But Romans 9 is about nations!”

Paul discusses Israel and the Gentiles, but he grounds his argument in God’s choice of Jacob over Esau before either had done good or evil (Rom. 9:11–16).

Then he anticipates the objection:

“Why does he still find fault? For who can resist his will?” (v.19)

“But that isn’t fair!”

Mercy isn’t something God owes us. If it were owed, it wouldn’t be mercy.

Calvinism does not teach that innocent people want salvation and God arbitrarily condemns them.

It teaches that fallen sinners willingly reject God, and God mercifully saves people who could never save themselves.

Man is responsible.
God is sovereign.
Sin is evil.
God is holy.
Sinners really believe.
Grace is why they do.

And the center of Calvinism isn’t Calvin.

It’s Christ.

In chapter 3 of my book I argue Matthew's Gospel reveals a profound spiritual crisis and why Israel (and the world) desperately needs a Messiah.

1. Israel Never Left Exile: Matthew's genealogy isn't just a list of names. It's a theological statement. The exile to Babylon never truly ended. Israel remains spiritually displaced, ruled by Caesar and Herod instead of a Davidic king.

2. The Root Problem: Jesus's very name reveals the diagnosis: "He will save his people from their sins" (Matt 1:21). Like prisoners in debt, Israel can't pay what they owe. They have broken the covenant. Exile isn't just geography; it's the wages of unrighteousness.

3. Fruitless Trees Get Cut Down: From John the Baptist's warning to Jesus's cursing of the fig tree, Matthew hammers home one image: Israel is a vineyard planted by God that bears no fruit.

4. They Knew the Law But Missed Its Heart: The scribes and Pharisees could quote Torah backward and forward. But Jesus exposes their fatal flaw: they tithed herbs while "neglecting the weightier matters—justice, mercy, and faithfulness" (Matt 23:23).

5. Outward Righteousness, Inward Emptiness: The Sermon on the Mount reveals the hollow core of Israel's religion. They avoided murder but harbored anger. They kept oaths but lacked integrity. Jesus demands a righteousness that exceeds the Pharisees'—one that transforms the heart.

6. Innocent Blood Cries Out: The ultimate unrighteousness is showing in God’s people crucifying their own Messiah. From Abel to Zechariah to Jesus himself, righteous blood stains Israel's hands.

7. We're All in Exile: This isn't just ancient Israel's problem. We all lock our own chains, turn the key on our own cells, and choose the wilderness over home. We need the same rescuer, the one who came to "fulfill all righteousness."

Let me pass on to you that which is of primary importance: that Jesus Christ, God come in the flesh, died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that He was buried in tomb, and that He was raised on the third day, putting death to death, according to the Scriptures. And that this genuine and historical event — the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus — is both intellectually credible and existentially satisfying.
