Sergeant Billy Walks About is remembered as one of the most highly decorated Native American soldiers who served during the Vietnam War.
Through his service, he received many military honors, including the Distinguished Service Cross, multiple Silver Stars, Bronze Stars, and Purple Hearts. His story reflects courage, dedication, and the deep tradition of service carried by many Native communities across generations.
Native American men and women have long served in the U.S. Armed Forces at notable rates, often carrying with them a strong sense of responsibility to family, community, and country.
Today, we remember Sergeant Billy Walks About with respect and gratitude, honoring not only his service, but also the many Indigenous veterans whose stories deserve to be seen, remembered, and respected.
