Social media is flooded with player development experts and skill acquisition specialists…
It’s trendy to pick a side and critique anyone whose drills or methods don’t match your personal coaching philosophy.
1. Results > Rhetoric
The best coach or trainer is the one who gets results.
If a player improves in tangible, identifiable ways, that coach is doing their job.
“Correlation doesn’t equal causation.” Just being around good players doesn’t mean you developed them. Too many try to claim credit after a few workouts.
But on the flip side, just because your methods aren’t backed by a niche study doesn’t make them invalid. Players respond differently. Coaches succeed differently. There are countless systems that win games—development is no different.
2. Impact > Theory
It’s easy to sit behind a screen and dissect how you would’ve done it better.
But if you’re not helping real players in real time, what value are you actually providing?
Some coaches land jobs without the ability to truly teach and develop. They can get stuck repeating the same drills they were taught years ago - which stunts their own growth and their players’ potential. But there’s more to coaching than just development, so it’s an easy to nitpick that element of their work.
The more time you work with players instead of hypotheticals, the better you become.
3. You Don’t Know What You Don’t Know
You don’t get better by tearing others down - you get better by building something worth sharing.
Coaches can only teach what they know, so help people learn. Growth requires risk, mistakes, and error.
“If you’re not cringing at drills you ran five years ago, you’re probably not evolving.”
There’s always a better way. But there’s usually a balance!
Extremely excited to see you guys in action this year! Coach Brock does such a great job maximizing and getting the most out of each player! All guys mentioned are college level players.

Why athletes and doctors succeed or fail by Nick Saban
“When people are process-oriented & they define: This is what I want, & this is what I need to do to do it, & then they have the discipline to execute it, that's when you get a talented player who becomes a great player.”
Great win by @CNUHoops_ tonight!
This is now the 9th time in the last 9 years they have won at least 1 game in the D3 NCAA tourney!
Tomorrow they look for their 6th consecutive Sweet 16 appearance, 8th in the last 9 years! 👀
Keep it rolling boys!

Hey @VHSL_ how do we get a shot clock imposed? The stall tactics teams are using is getting way out of hand.
Asking for all coaches...(or at least most). @VHSL_activities
Before the #5 Captains take on Sydney tonight, something to think about.
Over the L8 seasons: CNU
- 7 Sweet 16s
- 5 Elite 8s ( 4 in a row and should be 6 but was cut short in Covid)
- 3 Final 4s
- 1 Championship
- and an .840 win %
Not talked about enough!
