I am surprised our European partners have not put more pressure on Ireland to cop-on. Not surprised at what a disappointment both Michael Martin and Simon Coveney have been as Minister's for Defence - the country is practically defenceless as a result of their inaction. How sad.
“For an island maritime nation like 🇮🇪 to have 3/4 of its naval fleet tied up like that is outrageous”
“If @gardainfo can get a deserved €10m extra in pay to police Dublin city centre then surely the Navy can get €4m to police an area 8 times the size of the island of Ireland”
The treatment of the PDF since the late 90s has been pitiful and disgraceful. The 'peace dividend' for the ROI has been the downgrading of the PDF to levels below critical mass for even the most basic of state defence obligations. Shame on all politicians involved in this fiasco.
The fact that the @defenceforces retention crisis has been allowed to develop into a fully-fledged retention catastrophe since the publication of the Commission’s report in Feb ‘22 tells us all we need to know about the determination to address the issues.

Imagine even contemplating closing a fire station in the Curragh where the biggest munitions store in the country is. Urgent major action needed to prevent terminal decline of the Defence Forces.
Extra €10m secured by @HMcEntee for Garda pay recently.
Similar package needed urgently for @defenceforces to implement agreed increases in offshore allowances, tech pay & long service increments.
Heartbreaking to watch collapse of a once proud @naval_service due to inaction🤷♂️
Utilising this type of barrier, at this location, for this purpose, IF there was a reasonable expectation of forward pressure against them (as happens), is dangerously wrong.

🇮🇪’s armed forces at lowest strength in over 50 years.
Since 24 Feb 2022, all other EU states are enhancing their defences, yet 🇮🇪’s already meagre capability continues to collapse.
🇮🇪’s 2010 financial bailout may have ended, but our defence bailout from 🇪🇺 & 🇬🇧 continues…
The failure to arrest the inexorable decline in strength is due to the failure to address decades of neglect, to implement fair & safe working conditions, & absence of a credible retention policy. we cannot recruit our way out of this retention crisis. 1/

“The Commission believes that international liaison and co‐operation between @DefenceForces and the armed forces of other countries should be enhanced and strengthened with the immediate creation of a Defence Attaché network.” Hopefully much progress made here by @IRLDeptDefence!
"In Ireland the lack of investment in the defence forces has meant we can't protect and defend our own #neutrality, which goes against the international understanding of what #neutrality actually means" @ConorGallaghe_r
Completely speechless and blown over to have been awarded Honorary Fellowship of the incredible @emergencymii - this morning’s presentation made me cry
In 2023, Amárach Research was commissioned by European Movement Ireland to undertake research on attitudes in Ireland to the EU. Link to results below, which includes that 49% of Irish citizens are in favour of more involvement in EU Common Defence.

This seems like a very topical and worthwhile initiative - why is Ireland not a participating nation considering the critical sub-sea cables passing through our waters, or have I missed something?
EU Foreign Affairs approved the 5th wave of collaborative projects under PESCO, with 15 Member States participating.
Critical Seabed Infrastructure Protection is one of the new PESCO Projects. Sweden is one of the 6 Member States participating in CSIP.

France is Ireland's nearest EU neighbour
It concluded; “As long as DF lacks a dedicated strategic lift platform, it lacks capability to independently deploy & recover personnel & logistics to mission areas, or to assist Irish citizens through Non-Combatant Evacuation Operations when the commercial sector withdraws.” 2/3
