Today we remember a remarkable genius, a remarkable woman; straight talking, kind hearted, deeply loyal, she buried deep in the hearts of all who knew her, and changed the world of literature forever. Charlotte Bronte died, aged 38, #otd 1855, ending the Bronte line forever.

#otd 1857 "The Life Of Charlotte Bronte" by Elizabeth Gaskell was published, a work of genius, but there had been an even earlier Bronte biography "Jottings on Currer, Ellis and Acton Bell" in 1856.

#otd 1853 Charlotte Bronte's great last novel Villette is published. The heroine Lucy Snowe was initially called Lucy Frost, and this powerful novel is full of cold and loss.

#otd 1890 Clare Heger-Parent died in Brussels. As head of the Pensionnat Heger school she had been Charlotte Bronte's teacher and then employer. She was also the wife of Charlotte’s unrequited love Constantin Heger.

This fragment of wood has written upon it “morceau du cercueil de Ste. Hélène” or "piece of the coffin of St. Helene". It is actually a piece of Napoleon's coffin and was gifted to Charlotte Bronte by her unrequited love Monsieur Heger #otd 1843.

Martha Taylor died in Brussels but her memorial is in Gomersal, West Yorkshire. She was the inspiration for Jessy Yorke in Shirley by Charlotte Bronte, and Charlotte’s tribute to the friend she loved is in Shirley and on this menorial stone.
