"10 years ago this month, me and Jason packed up everything we could fit into a small camper, loaded up our two boys one 11 years old and one only 3 grabbed our two dogs, a few pots and pans, some clothes, and left Kentucky behind headed to West Virginia.
It was the first big move we had ever made together as a family. No family here. No real safety net. Just us, two little boys, two dogs, and faith that somehow God was gonna make a way when we couldn’t see one.
Jason had been laid off from the coal mines in Kentucky after spending years underground providing for us. Coal mining was all he had really known for about 13 years, and at that time there was barely any work to be found back home. We were on the verge of losing EVERYTHING we had worked our whole lives for.
People see where we are now, but they didn’t see those days.
The unemployment checks.
The food stamps.
Selling skid and pallet stuff at flea markets.
Doing odd jobs.
Trying to scrape together enough money to make house payments, vehicle payments, buy groceries, and feed our family.
The sleepless nights.
The stress.
The fear.
The praying.
Mentally and financially, it was one of the hardest seasons of our lives.
But one thing about me and Jason… we never laid down and quit. We never expected anybody else to carry us. We figured it out together.
I watched this man do whatever he had to do for his family. Applications after applications. Looking into any opportunity possible. He even went to lineman school trying to create another path if coal didn’t work out. I still remember the bruises and burns all over his legs from climbing poles and learning that trade. He was exhausted, but he kept pushing because that’s the kind of man he is.
Then one day in May, a friend Jason had worked with before helped him get an interview up here in Northern West Virginia. We drove 5 hours for that interview. I remember him telling me that he told them during the interview, “I’d really love to know something before I leave today if possible. I’ve got a 5 hour drive back home… and if I get this job, my wife and boys are all coming with me.”
Me and the boys sat out in the parking lot waiting while he interviewed. I was nervous sick praying the whole time.
Jason finally walked out and got into the old Hummer we used to have. I immediately asked him how it went. Before he could even finish explaining, three men came walking out of the building toward our vehicle. I remember thinking, “Lord, what is going on now?”
They motioned for Jason to get back out.
So he did.
And right there in that parking lot… they hired him on the spot.
They gave him a start date, and from that moment forward, our lives changed forever.
That was the breakthrough we had prayed so hard for.
For 10 years now, West Virginia has been home. Every single day I thank God, coal, and the hardworking man beside me for the life we’ve built here.
We went from living in a little camper for 4 months… to a trailer for 4 years… to buying a little ole country fixer upper house and paid CASH for it.. We’ve now lived in this house for 6 years, and honestly it’s my favorite place we’ve ever had because almost every piece of it has been remodeled by OUR hands with the help of both our boys. Every wall, every floor, every project has a story behind it.
Along the way we did have to sell one of our homes back in Kentucky, and that wasn’t easy. But we kept pushing forward. And we’re still blessed to have several more.
When I look back now, I realize those struggles built us. They humbled us. They made us appreciate every single thing we have today. Nothing was handed to us. Every bit of it came from sacrifice, hard work, long shifts underground, faith in God, and refusing to quit when life got hard.
Coal and God gave us a better life. Not a perfect life. But a blessed one.
And I’ll forever be proud of the man who carried so much weight on his shoulders to make sure his family stayed afloat.
10 years later… and I’m still thankful every single day we took that chance. 🖤🖤"
