My Sunday Times piece: The idea that we will need a universal basic income because of all the jobs that will be displaced by AI is gaining traction, but it is wrong on several counts:
We can’t afford a universal basic income — and don’t need it

“Britain needs a step change in its energy, food and defence policies.”
Keir Starmer should follow Mark Carney’s lead and invest in food, fuel and defence - or risk further economic decline and growing vulnerability to our enemies, says Andrew Neil.

My Times piece: Construction is in what looks to be a sustained downturn, the mood in housebuilding is bleak, and it wasn’t all due to pre-budget uncertainty:
Builders aren’t building – and that’s a worry for the economy

The @crisis_uk choir in the stunning Southwark Cathedral last night for carols, moving testimonies by people Crisis has helped out of homelessness, and celebrity readings. A wonderful evening. If you can give, please do. Here’s the link https://t.co/MtztIMJgpc
"This was being sold as the great reset."
Reeves could see two thousand pubs "close their doors" next year as the budget gave "the exact opposite" of what was promised to the hospitality industry, says chief executive of the British Beer and Pub Association, Emma McClarkin.
I started training at 8, by 10 I was in a swimming pool twice a day 6 days a week. As soon as I finished college I started full time work. I’ve always been self employed or run a small limited company, at one time employing three. I’ve had 3 kids & never taken a days maternity leave. I’ve never claimed a penny off the state in benefits. I’m 63 & still working. I’ve always paid my taxes on time & in full. Today I woke up & felt hard work, self responsibility & planning for my future is no longer rewarded in the Uk I’ve always loved 😞 we cannot keep killing aspiration… !
Some facts:
- There are 5.7 million small businesses in the UK.
- SMEs account for 99.9% of the business population.
- Total employment in SMEs is 16.7 million (61% of the total).
- Annual turnover from SMEs is estimated at £2.8 trillion.
- 60% of new businesses don’t survive beyond 5 years, often resulting in the founders losing their life savings.
- Small/medium businesses are the heart and soul of the British economy.
Starting and growing a business takes guts, resilience, and ambition – and needs to be supported for the economy to thrive.
Global corporations employ armies of accountants to minimise or eliminate their taxes.
Small businesses and startups don’t have the luxury or budget for that; frankly, most don’t want to.
They’re happy to pay their fair share – but draw the line when they believe they’re being taken advantage of.
A vibrant, flourishing economy that's supportive of business will generate far more tax revenue than one that crushes the British entrepreneurial spirit.
Why can’t she understand this?
Another political conspiracy of silence. Conservatives soaked the rich and protected middle earners who pay less direct tax than in other countries and than for decades in UK. If we want more revenue we need broad based tax rises. Can’t all come from some mythical rich “others”
Farming is not a 9-5 job. This combine will continue to harvest crops well into the evening. Farmers work every single day to provide our food. And for the Labour government to punish their endeavours is absolutely disgraceful.
Instead of raising £1.8bn, the inheritance tax raid on farmers and family businesses is expected to cost the government £2bn. They are cutting off their nose to spite their face.
It’s time for another Labour government U-turn. Scrap the inheritance tax on family businesses.
Tim Farron is right. Inheritance tax on family farms will force many farmers to sell up their farms, with the land going into the hands of the big corporations. A disaster for our food security and for Britain's countryside.
