The insidious nature of demoralization is that it's a slow, often gradual process. It’s easier to dismiss in its early stages. Near the end, you might not even realize how far you've drifted from your cultural/societal moorings. Yuri Bezmenov, a KGB agent who defected during the Cold War, was known for his critiques of Soviet methods for subverting Western societies. Here's how he described it: I. IDEOLOGICAL SUBVERSION Yuri placed emphasis on the idea of "ideological subversion" or "active measures." To him, the main goal was to demoralize & destabilize from within. II. FOUR STAGES OF SUBVERSION Yuri identified four stages in the subversion process: II. (a)(4)(iii) Discrediting Dissenting Voices Those who point out the ongoing demoralization are labeled as out-of-touch, alarmist, and reactionary. II. (a)(4)(iv) Cognitive Dissonance Faced with evidence that their society is being demoralized, many choose to dismiss or downplay the signs rather than confront the unsettling reality. II. (a)(5)Transition to Destabilization As demoralization concludes, there's an increase in actions/events that actively destabilize key areas of the society, like its economy, defense, and foreign relations.
