@chelsiamarcius@harrysiegel@DailyNews Koch and I were alone in the City Hall rotunda when we crossed paths early on the morning the story appeared. He looked glum to me. He waved me away from approaching. Although we saw each other almost daily during the work week, we never spoke about the piece.
@harrysiegel@DailyNews I suspected that people were simply polite to a celebrity. Unknown to Koch, fellow City Hall reporter Jim Harney walked behind and conducted follow-up interviews. The morning the story ran, Koch waved me away from approaching him in City Hall’s rotunda. His aides thanked me.
@harrysiegel Memories. I was @dailynews City Hall bureau chief. Koch repeatedly said Black NYers loved him. I asked how he knew. He said they were enthusiastic when he walked unannounced in Black neighborhoods. I pestered until he agreed that I could go with him.
